Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members - 08-22-2012
"MADE IN ENGLAND" RADIATOR CAP -
The "MADE IN ENGLAND" radiator cap we covered most recently in the August 1, 2012 Inner Circle. If you run the GM original part number for this radiator cap, it was 6410427 and it has been discontinued for sometime from GM. That was the original part number back in the late 1980s.
Because we deal in so many parts and see stickers on GM parts from many different countries, it seems unusual that whatever company in England that made the radiator caps for AC Delco during the 1980s was actually able to put the country of origin on the face of the radiator cap. Most countries I see as the source for parts usually have a removable sticker on the part or it's imprinted on the box.
Example - the RS and SS emblems for all the new 2010 and up Camaros have a sticker on the emblem that says "Korea." Not South or North Korea, just Korea! It seems odd to me that the Camaro, a car as American as apple pie, had to go to Korea to make the plastic exterior RS and SS emblems.
If you go on ebay and type in "AC Delco RC27 radiator cap," you will see a wide assortment of radiator caps listed for that part. All the listings say "RC27" and "15 lbs," which our cap is. This is what makes it so confusing, if you are restoring a car that is now 25 years old and older. If you look on ebay, you have at least a dozen or more choices of AC Delco RC27 radiator caps without really knowing what version came on your Turbo Buick when it was new. One reason why so many choices exist is the RC27 radiator cap was used on earlier years as well as later years.
This is because GM, like all the other car companies once a car has been produced the replacement parts are simply that, replacement parts not restoration parts. Even if the part number remains unchanged it does not mean the part has not changed.
PHOTO 1 - In this top left photo we show first the 100% correct original 1984-1987 Buick Regal radiator cap with the words “MADE IN ENGLAND” on it. The radiator cap in the middle is almost identical but does not say "MADE IN ENGLAND."
On the right is an original AC Delco RC27 radiator cap box. You may not be able to read the small print on the box, but it says "MADE IN INDIA." I do not know what radiator cap came in this box originally.
In the lower photo we show what I believe is two later versions of AC Delco replacement radiator caps for the RC27. The one on the left has the two ears on it, which most radiator caps have. The one shown on the right is a later-style replacement. With the wording being mostly a label, I assume production costs are probably cheaper than the earlier raised embossed radiator caps.
So, in quick review, there are currently no less than four AC Delco RC27 15 lb radiator caps that may be on your car's radiator. (Earlier AC Delco RC27 versions exist, but I believe these are the four that were produced after 1984.) I think it's a pretty safe bet that you won’t see a reproduction 100% correct AC Delco radiator cap for our cars that say "MADE IN ENGLAND" on them.
NOTE - If you need one, we have a good supply of original used ones, our Part #KE003. If you need one, call our office to order it - 215-766-1611.
VARIOUS VERSIONS OF CARPET SAVERS -
The more common term for carpet savers would be floor mats. For each Turbo Regal year (1984-1987), they listed two versions. The codes that would appear on your trunk ID label for the better ones are "B34" and "B35." GM referred to them as front carpet savers with inserts and rear carpet savers with inserts. The fronts were $25 and the rears were $20 per set. These were the more expensive ones.
This version came in every single GNX as original equipment. These were the better carpeted floor mats. The fronts had a wire band in the back around the bottom half of the floor mat and was molded into the rubber. The passenger's side had a square GM logo that appeared in the top portion of the passenger's side floor mat only. This GM logo was 1-1/4" square.
Where the confusion is, on the driver's floor mat this mat was only notched on the driver's side, NOT both sides of the floor mat. The company that makes our mats only makes that version for us! That is why most front floor mats you see from other suppliers have the driver's side notched on BOTH sides.
That version that has the driver's floor mat notched on both sides was the cheaper accessory floor mats you could buy from the Buick dealership. I am not implying that the ones available with the driver's floor mat notched on both sides is wrong, only that to match the code B34 and B35 you would want the version we have.
Years ago Bowling Green Customs would do logo style floor mats and he virtually wiped out the supply of the single notched version from the GM parts system. He purchased over 300 sets. Bowling Green Customs offered them from around 1987 until the early 1990s.
What I am not sure of is the cheaper version listed for each year (1984-1987) is codes B32 and B33. They sold for $17 and $12 per set for fronts and rears. My books are quite vague, so I think this would be for the rubber-style floor mats. It’s possible the accessory style floor mats were B32 and B33 and did not have the metal wire band in them. I also don’t know if an original set of the accessory ones had the small GM logo on the passenger's side floor mat. I think, because of the price difference, the cheaper version did not have the wire band molded in the mats and may not have had the GM logo on the passenger's front floor mat.
Again, I welcome any proof from any original owner that can verify codes B32 and B33 and what floor mats they were.
Fortunately, I have copies of all our old newsletters and catalogs. We actually started to have these original equipment style (B34 and B35) produced way back in the Fall of 1992. So, we've been selling the upgraded version mats for twenty years! It is the only version we sell, regardless if it's plain or if it has a GM licensed logo on it.
Last week on ebay there was a pair of brand new GM floor mats, the single notched driver's side and the passenger side had the GM logo and of course the wire band in them. The seller was seeking $750 for the pair or best offer. While most of us would agree $750 is quite a steep price for something to put your feet on, you can see how restoration on our Turbo Regals is changing.
Our part number numbers for our front floor mats are #6511, #6883, #7162, and #7168. All of these would match the format of the original equipment better grade mats B34 and B35.
PHOTO 2 - This left photo shows an original driver's side floor mat. Notice the notch on the left side only of the driver's floor mat. In the photo on the right we show the back side. In the main area where you would rest your foot, you can probably see the outline of the metal band that is molded into the carpet set. It has a part number on it that reads "22523882." The passenger's side floor mat has the same identical number on it. I can find no reference in any of my books to this number.
PHOTO 3 - In this top photo we show the top portion of an original passenger's side floor mat. Centered in the top portion is the 1-1/4" square GM logo. In the lower photo we show that same general area where the GM logo appears and you can see the outline of where it would be on the front side.
Since I have been going to various junkyards over the last several weekends, I have gotten educated on how GM has used some of the same parts in various other models around the same vintage. In my area, the oldest GM cars I come across are the late-1980s front-wheel drive cars.
It appears GM used that same 1-1/4" GM logo for a few years after our cars were produced. Interesting enough, in some models that GM logo appears on both front mats. Probably because front-wheel drive cars took a wider pair of floor mats. The example we show is for the Grand National being black, but that same format crosses over to any color factory GM floor mat on your trunk ID codes.
It’s unlikely any company at this point would spend the money for tooling to make passenger's side floor mat to have the molded in GM logo.
So, in quick review, if you are seeking the most correct front floor mats that match the trunk ID codes of B34 and B35, our company is probably the only source and has been for 20 years.
PHOTO 4 - In this top photos show our Fall 1992 catalog and the page showing the new plain black and embroidered Power Six floor mats. This was the very first catalog that these floor mats appeared in. The lower left photo shows four different original color GM rubber emblems that I removed from used floor mats in a junkyard. They are tan, burgundy, blue, and grey.
The lower right photo shows one current GM logo emblem that is similar in size to what GM put on the floor mats. This is the metal stick-on emblem that GM started to put on every exterior GM car beginning with the 2006 models. This emblem measures 1" by 1".
We welcome any comments on carpeted floor mats related to the 1984-1987 Turbo Regals.
AUTOMOTIVE ODDITIES I HAVE SPOTTED -
You can draw your own conclusions as to whether or not these are good ideas.
A few years back, I spotted a sports car that had a removable hardtop. Someone had installed a pop-up sunroof into the removable hardtop!
The other unusual sighting I recently saw was a late-model Ford sedan that had a rear spoiler. Mounted across the rear spoiler on the exterior was a group of either plastic or diecast 1:24 scale cars! I have no idea how they were attached.
THIS MARRIAGE WAS DOOMED BEFORE IT STARTED -
You may have caught this on your local news. The couple lived about 30 miles from where we live. Seems the night before their wedding the bride-to-be and the groom-to-be got into a serious argument, and during the argument the bride to be stabbed the groom-to-be. One of the stab wounds ended up going through his heart killing him.

Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.
If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected].

IN CLOSING -
In next week's issue we will announce the date for our Fall Open House.

In the main area where you would rest your foot, you can probably see the outline of the metal band that is molded into the carpet set. It has a part number on it that reads "22523882." The passenger's side floor mat has the same identical number on it. I can find no reference in any of my books to this number.

In other words, this is a complete kit ready to install. You do not have to cut any part of your dash, you simply remove your dash and drop this one in. All the gauges are all pre-fit properly.
The only item you will have to buy to complete it is the proper plug-and-play harness, which is available from World of Motorworks. You have to specify if you have an analog dash or a digital dash when you order the harness.
The price for this complete GNX-style dash is $1,995 plus shipping.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE - We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website.
