Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members 03-06-2019 –
OUR ANNUAL SPRING OPEN HOUSE DATE IS NOW CONFIRMED –
Our annual Spring Open House will be Saturday, May 4, 2019 from 9 until 2 pm. It has no rain date. We had to move it from the usual date in April due to the landlord making a several improvements to the offices and warehouse area. The landlord is doing all these improvements himself on the weekends, which is the reason for the date of the first Saturday in May.
This will be our 31st year of Open House/Reunion Events. A record I don’t believe any other company can equal in our industry. For more info, see the Events section, which lists various motels in the area that some people have already requested.
The event will be a combined event with “Black Ice Details” that shares our building space. He details high-end cars.
LAST WEEK’S TURBO REGAL TRIVIA QUESTION ANSWERED –
We stumped everyone that responded to last week’s trivia question. Wrong answers included the Chrysler Crossfire, Saabs, and various BMW models. The key clue was the fact I stated it is a fairly-rare model, especially with a 6-speed format.
See Photo 1 we show several photos of the actual car. The car is a 2003 Mercedes Benz C230 coupe. This is the supercharged 4-cylinder model. This is extremely rare to find today with the manual 6-speed option. I would guess 4 out of every 5 would have an automatic transmission. On ebay the other week I only saw a total of 2 and both were automatics. They only made this model a few years. Also, black seems to be a hard color to find.
The car only needed tires and rear brakes for PA inspection and emissions. Quiet engine no leaks, no paint work ever, interior is mint virtually showing no wear anywhere as is the body. I think a woman owned it since it shows virtually no wear in the interior, not even in the factory carpeted floor mats. The paint shines like the car has been garaged. Car is Kirban quality. It is tough to beat German engineering in built quality and handling.
PHOTO 1 - We show several views of the black-on-black 2003 Mercedes Benz C230 coupe with a manual 6 speed.
THIS WEEK’S TRIVIA QUESTION –
The trivia question this week focuses on Turbo Regals. Here is the question. Every 1986-1987 Grand National has just one of these. However, every Turbo Regal Limited has two of these. Name the part/item I am referring to. Remember your answer must match mine. Should no correct answer be received, we will give more clues next week. Email me your educated guess to - [email protected]
TURBO REGAL DOCUMENTATION UPDATE –
As you read this week’s Inner Circle, I have finally put all the records for the Turbo Regals we sold in sequential VIN order. I have copies of Certificate of Origin for some of the Turbo cars I have bought, original window stickers, actual photos, broadcast sheets, just to name some of the rare documentation that is highly desirable if it’s for your car.
If you email me just the last 6 digits of the VIN for 1986 or 1987 models only, I may have some documentation on your car - [email protected]
The price of this material will be based on what exactly what I do have. In some cases, I may even have a copy or the original Window Sticker. Depending on my memory, I may even remember when I picked up the car and exactly where it was located. If the car was bought prior to 2003 I would have information from our monthly Grand News which would detail the options and price we sold it for since I have every copy of our Grand News from 1988 thru 2002. Remember, I did most of the buying of these cars back in the 1990s and early 2000 timeframe.
You just never know. I do have records on almost every car. If you are on any of the various websites and Facebook, feel free to put the word out that we may have documentation on their Turbo Regal, if it’s one that passed thru my hands over the last 30 years. This may prove better than playing your state lottery as I may have info on your 1986-1987 Turbo Regal or GNX!
BY THE NUMBERS –
I have records for 41 of the 1986 Turbo Regals. I found records for over 230 of the 1987 Turbo Regals we sold. Also records for 10 of the GNXs, records for 3 Syclones, 1 Typhoon and 1 Turbo Trans Am. Even records for the 1 GS Skylark Stage 1 we purchased. We bought the Stage I Buick when I bought a T-Type from a customer in Ohio. He rented a few garages and as I was loading the T-Type on my trailer he mentioned he had a Stage 1 Buick that needed restoration that he was going to sell. I took a quick look and told him I would give him an answer in a few days since I did not know much about those cars. A week later I was back picking up the Stage 1 Buick.
GNX DOCUMENTATION RECORDS –
As we noted above we have some records for 10 of the 11 GNXs we have owned. (Wish I still had the actual GNXs rather than just the paperwork!) Of the 10 GNXs, on one of them I only have the VIN and not the actual GNX number. I know it’s a GNX as we sold it for over $40 grand.
Here is GNX VIN for the one I don’t know the car number for. The VIN is HP452024. I know it’s a GNX as I sold the car for $40 grand. Here are the other 9 GNX car numbers: 161, 254, 295, 331, 356, 425, and 500. In most of these cases, I have a clean copy of the ASC Window Sticker and in some cases I have a laminated version of the ASC Window Sticker. I can only assume in some cases these are the cars we did own since I have these papers. Remember, GNXs did not get any special VIN numbers from GM.
HERE IS ONE EXAMPLE MATCHING DOCUMENTATION TO THE CURRENT OWNER –
Last week got a call from a person in Louisiana. He says about 3 years ago he bought a 1987 Grand National hardtop from a buyer in Texas. That buyer claimed that the person he got it from claimed it was a Kirban car years ago purchased out of Minnesota. The current owner has only driven it maybe 200 miles in the last 3 years. The car has about 15,000 miles on it.
I knew the car immediately as it was the only car I actually drove pass the Mississippi River to buy. The Grand National was in the twin cities. The seller ran a detail shop in the basement of a high-rise parking garage. I remember the trip as it was one of the few times I actually delivered another Grand National to its new owner in Iowa on the way to Minnesota. I remember stopping along the highway in Iowa with my truck and trailer by the sign that said, “Clear Lake,” which has been made famous among rock and roll fans.
It is also one of the very few times I would buy a highly-modified Grand National as they were usually a risky deal. This Grand National was incredible with only 11,500 miles on it when I picked it up. This was back in May of 2003. I marketed the car back then stating it was the best of the best and it truly was. I sold it for $20 grand back in 2003. I paid $16 grand for the car. I believe the person I bought it from has since then passed away several years ago.
The current owner tells me now it only has 15,066 miles on it. Quick math tells you in almost 16 years the car has traveled fewer than 4,000 miles! The current owner says the car is still mint in every respect. What is amazing is that the buyer that bought the car from me resided in New York.
So, if you look at a map of the US and figured I trailered it from the Twin Cities in Minnesota to eastern Pennsylvania. My buyer resided in New York, at some point after that it ended up in Texas and now in Louisiana, so it has probably travelled more miles on a trailer in the last 15 years than it has been driven on the road!
The current owner bought all the documentation I have as he recognizes the value of documentation.
PHOTO 2 – The photo to the left shows the actual full color ad that we made up to market the Grand National in May of 2003. The photo to the right shows a copy of the title. The car was titled it through O’Neil Buick GMC. For many years, I had a salesmen license with O’Neil Buick/GMC. I now hold a license with a dealership near our house. The date was May 7, 2003 with 11,542 actual miles. The current owner will get copies of these papers plus some other documentation including the paperwork showing I paid $16,000 for the car. I believe the current owner in Louisiana may be selling the Grand National.
PHOTOS OF JUST A FEW OF THE CARS I HAVE DOCUMENTATION FOR –
In the next photo, we show just a sampling of some of the documentation I have for the Turbo Regals that have passed through our hands. In the Photo 3 you can see the Auto Trader ad for a WE4. This was one of the very first cars we bought came out of Mt Pleasant, SC years ago.
PHOTO 3 – We show various forms of documentation for two of the Turbo Regals we have sold, actual auto trader ad for a WE4 we bought out of Mt Pleasant, SC. Also in another photo is actual copy of the Certificate of Origin, which is extremely rare to have! Again, it cost you nothing to email me the last 6 digits of your VIN from your 1986 or 1987 Turbo Regal. You never know… it may have been one of ours 15 to 25 years ago! We did specialize in extremely nice examples.
SOME IDEAS MAKE YOU WONDER WHAT WERE THEY THINKING –
Some ideas make you wonder what they are thinking. I was behind a Honda the other day and could not believe what this owner had done. The way the tailpipes exited out the back. I followed him into a shopping center just so I could take a picture of it.
PHOTO 4 – Shows several photos what I believe is an older Honda sporting what has to be the weirdest format for tailpipes to exit out the back of a car. Judging from the dirt on the exhaust pipes, it had to be done a while ago. I can’t imagine a repair shop wanting to take credit for making this system. These tailpipes had to extend at least 12 inches or longer and exited on an angle out the back of the Honda! I actually sent this photo to Pypes Exhaust as well!
CORRECTION ON AC DELCO OIL FILTERS –
John Follweiler informed me that we made an error in last week’s Inner Circle. The early Made in England oil filters also had the larger label. The difference is only the Made in England oil filters had the two ribs. The US-made filters do not have that two ribs.
NEW REPRODUCTION 1986-1987 GRAND NATIONAL WHEELS –
GBodyParts.com has been at the forefront of getting many items reproduced for our market. We have known Brian for many years and we buy from each other. He has reproduced the factory style 15 by 7 Grand National wheels in light-weight aluminum. The company used aircraft quality 356 aluminum. His version has a better format to secure the center cap than how Buick did on the original steel chrome wheels. He even kept the power six logo reversed to match the original center caps, which was the trivia answer a few weeks ago.
By reproducing the 1986-1987 Grand National wheels in the proper size, it gives you a better option to retain a fairly-stock appearance and at the same time saves you almost 11 pounds on each wheel versus the factory steel chrome wheel.
Besides, the chrome plating Buick did on the original steel Grand National wheels falls short of being show quality, in many cases. Also, in many cases improper use of a tire machine over time has ruined the chrome surface. The only way to get a stock steel chrome wheel re-plated is to cut the center out of the wheel and then chrome it and re-weld it. That’s an expensive venture when you times it by 4 wheels! Plus, the cost to ship 4 wheels to have the process done.
So ideally you install these wheels and it saves you almost 44 lbs. If you buy or have the aluminum front and rear bumper supports, that cuts down the overall car weight even more. If you purchase the aluminum rear brake drums, not only does it give the car a better appearance, it again saves you weight.
According to Brian he had 500 sets made. He has all the offsets figured out and the rims available in 15 by 7, 15 by 8, and 15 by 10. Rims are tested and speed rated, which is critical. I know as we were the very first company back in the 1980s to get the GTO Ralley I wheels made and the Mopar steel wheels reproduced. Trust me, with my lack of math skills, it was quite a bit of work to come up with the proper offsets for the GTO wheels since the original wheels were only 14 inch and we made them in 15 inch and made them in various sizes as well.
Below is the direct link to GBodyParts’ website for info on the newly reproduced stock size Grand National wheels. If it was me, I would run 15 by 7s up front and 15 by 8s on the rear.
Here is a link to these wheels on their website.
CLASSIC CAR FRAUD ON THE HIGHEST LEVEL –
You may have seen it in the newspaper where a special model Porsche that Jerry Seinfeld owned and auctioned off for $1.54 million has turned out to be a fake. This is resulting in a lawsuit. But as Jerry’s lawyer has pointed out, Jerry does not need to make fake Porsche cars to supplement his income. It appears that whoever Jerry got the unique Porsche from will have to step up to the plate and admit to the issue or point in the direction of whoever they got the Porsche from.
This is just one high-level example of classic antique car fraud.
In another case a company made a fake 396 Chevelle Supersport, even paying $25 grand to obtain the original paperwork, which was from another Chevelle that probably got totaled! No car model of any real high value and demand is exempt from fraud happening.
As values continue to climb for Grand Nationals and GNXs, I am sure you will see it and maybe have already where someone has tried to market a fake GNX or a Grand National as the real car. Buick should have taken a little more steps to make the cloning difficult for a GNX or at the very least assigned them a special set of 16 digit VIN numbers. Years ago, at the dealer level you had to have the VIN from a GNX to purchase particular GNX parts.
Making a fake or phony Grand National using a black Turbo Regal car would be fairly easily to do. As prices continue to rise for 1987 Grand Nationals it opens the door to making a fake 1987 Grand National. The real prize in the fake Turbo Regal world would be to create a fake GNX. Almost everything is available to create a fake GNX.
With all that being said, original documentation takes on a lot more value as the years pass and the Turbo Regals continue to climb in value. With so few being made originally and now 30-plus years later and with demand strong, it’s the perfect combination for someone or some restoration shop to make a fake Grand National or GNX.
Buying any Grand National or GNXs at these high-end auctions does not provide enough time to make an intelligent decision as to how authentic that shiny Grand National or GNX really is. The auction company is there to get the biggest dollar possible and the seller, in many cases, is not the actual car owner, but a shop that specializes in selling collectable cars. In other words, do your homework to avoid a possible mistake.
WE HAVE MORE JEEP STEERING SHAFTS IN STOCK FOR IMMEDIATE DELIVERY –
See the Rare Parts section for pricing. This is the upgraded lower steering shaft that eliminates the fiber steering coupler at the steering box. The Jeep shaft has steel universal joints at both ends and is more streamlined over the stock bulky lower steering shaft that the Regals came with.

When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.
Most people having problems are using Internet Explorer. If you are having issues with links, try another browser to see if it works.
You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be use you are using the current version.
NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -
We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these must be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.
If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]
