WE HAVE A FEW MORE GOOD USED TURBO REGAL PARTS FOR SALE -

All these parts can be found in the Rare Parts section for sale. Everything is priced to sell.

PHOTO 1 - The top left shows mint original stock 1986-1987 Turbo Regal intercooler. The top right shows a real nice 1986-1987 Turbo Regal am/fm radio (no cassette) with side brackets. The bottom left photo shows a brand fender gripper Buick Motorsport fender cover. The bottom right photo shows the huge 1987 Buick Service Manual Volume 1 and 2 in the original binders.

PHOTO 2 - The top left photo shows an original 1987 Buick/Oldsmobile/Cadillac Body Service Manual. The top right photo shows a metal black license frame with the “We Brake For Corvettes” decal on it. The bottom left photo shows Volume 1 and 2 of Dennis Kirban’s Tips, Trivia and Sources for 1986-1987 Buick Turbo Regals. The bottom right photo shows Richard Clark and John Norton “Powermaster Brake System Troubleshooting and Repair Guide and 1984-1987 Turbo Regal Power Antenna Removal and Installation Guide books.

FEW MINOR TIP BITS THAT DISTINGUISH AN ORIGINAL 1986-1987 TURBO REGAL -

With this 7,700 mile original 1987 Grand National at my location I figured this would be a good time to share some photos of some of the small details that are seldom seen on a 33 year old Turbo Regal. Details that help verify that the car is a true low mileage example and has not been tampered with or modified.

Over the years I have been approached about writing a book on restoring a 1986-1987 Turbo Regal. I have always declined because it is a painstaking task not only to write a book, but to make it 99.9% accurate. I have done well with the books I have written. To write a book on the topic of restoring a 1986-1987 Turbo Regal you would need access to a prime example and have the ability to write it. When I wrote my first book I had several Turbo Regals all the time right outside my house. I also had an inside connection at Buick that provided me with important information and would verify my findings. This was critical because I covered all the various Turbo Regal models, including the 1987 Limited versions. I also am lucky enough to have a wife who has a far better grasp on English grammar and sentence structure than I do. English was not a good subject for me in High School.

I have to confess in the very beginning I never even knew Turbo Limited models existed until I bought my first one. Remember back then there was no internet. Also, I never realized that in 1986 it was possible to order a T-Type with pillow style leather seats in tan or grey. I bought a 1986 black T-Type with the factory astroroof and it was equipped with the tan leather pillow seats. The door panels were the same as a regular T-Type. I was able to even verify the production numbers for both the tan leather seats and the grey leather seats for the 1986 T-Type models. Either version is a very rare example to own today. When you write a book you have to make sure it's accurate as people will believe it when it's in a book. It would be extremely difficult to write a book today and cover all the aspects of restoring a 1986 or 1987 Grand National.

With all that being said here are some pictures of some of the small unique details that can usually only be found on an original 1986 or 1987 Turbo Regal.

PHOTO 3 - The top left photo shows a close up of the black push button that secures the air cleaner duct to the radiator support. Most owners will use a nut and bolt to reattach the air duct. The top right photo shows the original black plastic cap on the back of the hot lead to the alternator. Many are missing. You would think the cap would be red and not black. The bottom left photo shows a closeup of the bracket that secures the power steering reservoir to the inner fender. Note the stud has a rubber boot on it so you don’t scrape your hand on it. The bottom right photo shows the original date sticker on the top of the coil pack. If you ever replace the coil pack try and save that decal!

PHOTO 4 - The top left shows a grey plug on the throttle stop. Don’t ever lose that grey plug as most rubber plugs you buy today are black! The top right photo shows 2 versions of the shifter indicator on the console. I have to confess I am responsible for making the wrong one! I did it years ago to add some flare to the shifter indicator! The “D” should be white like all the other letters!

The bottom left shows the plug wire bracket on the passenger side valve cover. It is critical to always use the proper length wires. Thicker plug wires have very little advantages over the stock format. Also make sure you position them to run alongside the upper plenum to the coil pack. If they go over the plenum the sharp edge of the plenum will cause issues. The bottom right photo shows the one-of-the-kind heater water valve. All the aftermarket heater water valves look nothing like the factory GM one. These get nasty looking over a period of time and can leak. Just to buy the four molded hoses that go to that heater water valve and the heater box we have to buy them from two different sources.

Next week we will show more of the small trivia items that help verify an original untouched 1986-1987 Turbo Regal.

THE GOOD OLE DAYS -

After the Spring and Summer we all witnessed the good ole days look a lot better than this past Spring and Summer. In the good ole days masks were worn only on or around Halloween and by those that made their living robbing banks. This summer masks have become a major business for many companies. In our state the governor requires everyone to wear a mask from age 2 and older. In comparison to some of the other countries the minimum age is 11 or 12.

If you have a child that is 3 or 4 years old it can be extremely difficult to make them understand that wearing a mask is a must.

THE POST OFFICE -

We all depend on the mail. It brought back memories for me. It was the 1970s something my parents lived in a small suburb of Philadelphia. My Dad had a huge insurance client that he would do 100,000 bulk mailings for. The company that did the inserting was in Philadelphia just off route 95 under one of the PA-NJ bridges. My Dad believed strongly in supporting the post office in his town so these emails all carried the bulk address of Huntingdon Valley. I think my Dad was probably the largest mail firm in Huntingdon Valley.

I would pick up the huge 50lb mail bags of these bulk mailings and haul them back from Philadelphia to Huntingdon Valley. I eventually bought a stake body truck to do the hauling. Then I discovered a clever way to make money hauling something down to Philadelphia in my stake body truck. Since I already had towing clients I would sort through their junk tires and I set up selling good tires to a recap place. The trick is to pack them carefully so you can haul as many as possible. Could say I was ambitious when I was young!

ON THE NEWSFRONT -

I just got my latest copy of Hemmings Muscle Machines October 2020. It features an article where the writer's grandfather bought in 1987 a WE4 and with his recent passing passed the car down to his grandson who hopes to eventually restore it. Car is 99% original. It needs a major detailing under the hood, something I am very good at having owned a few!

In the same issue is a very detailed article listing the various U.S. muscle cars from the 1980s and 1990s and their approximate range of value. As you can imagine the 1986-1987 Turbo Regal and the 1986-1987 Grand National hit the highest value. The Grand National average $30 grand to a high of $50 grand. It shows the T-Type/Turbo-T at an average of $16 grand and a high of $35 grand. The only other US muscle car to even come close is the Viper GTS at $45 grand.

I don’t agree with some of their findings. Such as rating the Hurst Olds at an average of $3 grand to a high of just $4500. Trust me you would be hard pressed to find a nice Hurst Olds anywhere near the $4500 mark! My guess is that figure for a nice example should be closer to $10 grand. They list the 1988-1992 Lincoln LSC at an average of $4 grand and a high of $9,500. I can’t fathom how they reached those numbers for Lincoln. They seem to be also very fond of the 1994-1996 Impala SS. The Impala SS comes in at $14 grand average and $19 grand at the high end. Personally if I had $19 grand to spend a better investment would be the Turbo Regal.

The Monte Carlos come in at an average of $5,500 and a high of $9,500. I can’t say one way or the other as I have had very little experience at selling them. I have sold maybe 3 of them.

For Mustang the Fox body they only list the GT hatchback models at an average of $7 grand and a high of $13 grand. The real valuable one is the fox body notchback. I have sold about 6 of them years ago and they always sold quickly, especially the manual shift ones. Try and find a notchback Mustang today that is stock and manual shift is close to impossible.

One thing I think we can all agree on, is the numbers they show for the T-Type/Turbo-T and the Grand Nationals are quite impressive, especially when you compare to the other U.S. muscle cars they list for the 1980s and 1990s. It is interesting to note the article fails to even mention the Corvette. Had they mentioned the Corvette the only one of note would have been the 1996 model in my opinion.

Muscle Machines is published by Hemmings. It is a very slick looking magazine. Well with subscribing to. To order online go to www.hemmings.com/subscribe or email is [email protected]

DODGE PACKS A LOT OF HORSEPOWER IN THEIR 2021 MODEL LINEUP -

Dodge for 2021 is the only U.S. car company to offer three different models with 700-plus-horsepower vehicles. The Challenger Hellcat will pack 807 horsepower and cover 0-60 times in a mere 3.3 seconds. The Charger Hellcat will have 797 horsepower and has a top speed on 203 mph. The newest addition is the Durango Hellcat with 710 horsepower limited to a mere 180 mph. The Durango has over 4 ton towing capacity and will cover 0-60 in 3.5 seconds. Because of new emissions for 2022 the Durango model with the Hellcat engine is a one year only. Translation the Durango Hellcat will be a rare model in years to come and I am sure will obtain collector status in a few years.

Whether you are a Dodge fan or not, I know when I was selling GTOs in the late 1970s I had very good luck selling the few Mopars I bought. Back then I only bought Mopars that were in mint condition as I had very little knowledge as to their value. I had a bench seat 1969 4-speed Road Runner, 3 different 1967 GTX models, a 1970 Road runner, a AAR Cuda, a 1968 GTX convertible. Also had a 383 Dart GTS, a 4-speed Duster. Only one of these was Hemi powered and it was a 1967 GTX hardtop. Almost doubled my investment on the sale of that car. Yes, those were the good ole days!

1987 GRAND NATIONAL T-TOPS WITH 7,700 ACTUAL MILES FOR SALE -

Here is a chance to own a really nice example that has had excellent care for the last 33 plus years by 3 owners. I am selling this for a customer of ours. I actually met him a few years back at a GTO car show where he had this car on display.

He is in the process of moving to Florida and would rather sell his car than transport it to Florida. With the car goes a complete 3-ring binder with most of the original 1987 Buick dealer brochures, the original window sticker, the certificate of origin, letters from Buick and recall notifications, and magazine articles.

Here is a list of the options: T-tops, power door locks, power windows, tinted glass, power trunk release, body side molding, 2-speed wipers, posi rear, headlights on indicator, am/fm cassette player, power antenna, rear defogger, tilt column, 6-way power driver's seat, and door edge guards. The sticker price in 1987 was $18,392.00.

The car is in my possession. Here is my overall review. The car has had excellent care its entire life. Garaged as each owner was a true car collector. The body and paint is as close to perfect as you will find. Not one single ding anywhere. The wheels if I had GM boxes I could sell them for new. Interior is exactly as you would expect for 7,700 miles like new in every regard and smells new. Even the dash panel is not cracked. Spare and jack have never been disturbed. Trunk ID label is perfect as are the 2 labels on the drivers door as well as the visor decal.

The doors shut like a brand new car. Car shows no signs of ever being driven hard. I test drove the car drives tight and rattle free. The transmission shifts nice and strong. Power windows are slow as expected. The power antenna is the only non working part on the car to my knowledge.

The underside of the car. The entire underside is very clean, the gas tank is still bright silver. Exhaust is 100% original with a few pin size holes in the original muffler. You can still see parts of the original labels on the springs, and sway bars. Air dams are perfect and it still retains the screen in the scoop.

Here is a list of the upgrades and changes: The owner recently had brand new Bilstein shocks installed and new Michelin tires. The best of the best. A twin console gauge holder has a tach and boost gauge. It has a Grand National medallion in the center horn ring. It has the one oil fill tube we sell. The AC has been changed over to R134a. The brake system has been converted to the more practical vacuum format. It has been painted show quality. Everything else remains factory original even the 3 intercooler hoses, mass air hose, air cleaner assembly, and plug wires are factory original. If I were to box it the hood pad could be sold as new. No damage at all. Perhaps most amazing is all the factory fillers front and rear are still soft with zero cracks. They do discolor and need to be cleaned. If you do the math 7,700 miles total in 33 years the car has hardly been used.

Asking Price: $38,900

Options to purchase: JJ Best has never turned down any of my cars I have represented for the buyer. They make financing very easy especially on Grand Nationals. Also I am open to partial trades where I would buy your trade and pay that difference to the seller. I would have to see the trade in order to consider it. The trade can be virtually any muscle car or even a 1986-1987 Turbo Regal that needs attention. Also whoever does buy this Grand National will get a 10% discount on any of our website parts for the first 30 days. This gives the buyer several options.

We have taken plenty of photos this past weekend including the underside of the car when it was on my lift. For More information and detailed photos email me direct [email protected]

We are still experiencing delays in getting parts. Some of the factory original GM parts are getting more difficult to get. Common parts such as radiator hoses are getting hard to get. It’s best to plan your purchases well in advance of when you need them to avoid disappointment in deliveries.

NEW PRODUCTS FROM US –

1986-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
REPRODUCTION VACUUM BRAKE PEDAL

We now offer this reproduction vacuum brake pedal. The difference between the vacuum brake pedal and a Turbo Regal pedal is the location of the pin that the rod goes to that comes through the firewall. The vacuum brake pedal makes the installation easier. Without the vacuum brake pedal, you would need to weld a new pin in a different location on the original Turbo Regal brake pedal.

Finding a good used vacuum brake pedal has become more difficult as time passes. Because many Turbo Regal owners are converting to vacuum brakes, the demand has been heavy.

This reproduction pedal has solved that issue of using a 30-plus-year-old rusted vacuum brake pedal.

NOTE - You need to re-use the original bolt and bushings to secure the pedal to the bracket under the dash. The pedal is bare metal and will require painting.

7916 - 1986-1987 Buick Regal - Reproduction Vacuum Brake Pedal - $99.95

It is compatible with #7607 Dual Fan Conversion Kit and Custom-made Plug-and-Play Harness and #7608 Dual Fan Only we sell.

This bracket requires no holes to be drilled in the core support or the dual fan kit.

The end result is the dual fan setup will sit flush against the radiator. The bracket secures the dual fan at the bottom of the core support. It is barely visible.

Each bracket comes with detailed directions. You do have to trim all 4 mounting tabs on the dual fan unit.

NOTE - ABOUT LINKS IN THE INNER CIRCLE -

We have heard from a couple people that have had problems with the links in our Inner Circle.

When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.

Most people having problems are using Internet Explorer. If you are having issues with links, try another browser to see if it works.

You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be used if you are using the current version.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these must be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]

ABOUT OUR EMAILS -

Any inquiries concerning used parts, you must email me directly - [email protected] - and I will answer you. However, if I fail to answer you within 24 hours, please email us again. Since expanding into used parts, I get a lot of emails and sometimes I may forget your request or may not remember who requested the item.

IN CLOSING –

We need good used 1984-1987 Turbo Regal steering wheel cores. You must email me a photo first. We issue a $100 letter-of-credit for each steering wheel.
