HURST/OLDS 28TH ANNUAL NATIONAL MEET -

The HURST/OLDS Club of America 28th Annual National Meet was held this past Friday and Saturday at AACA Museum in nearby Hershey, PA.

I was there as a guest speaker and also a vendor at this event. While my knowledge of Hurst Olds is limited, I do know quite a bit about early Hurst history, which is what I spoke about at their opening meeting. Among Hurst collectors, I am known for having the rarest collection of related material.

As one might guess, the 1983 and 1984 Hurst/Olds being a GM G-body car share a lot of parts with our Turbo Buicks, even if they lack power under the hood. Although it was a small event (approximately 45 cars), almost all the cars present where top notch. I think I counted at least 8 or 9 real 1969 HO 455 cars. Their values are close to what a GNX in value, depending on condition, miles, etc.

There was no 1968 Hurst/Olds at this event. But several prototypes were there, including a one-of-a-kind 1977. The owners of that car actually own one of every year Hurst/Olds!

During my talk I stumped the audience on what under-the-hood part of the 1983-1984 Hurst/Olds says "Made in England" on it? No one knew the answer. I had looked at several cars before hand and sure enough, they used the same AC Delco radiator cap that we have on our cars. I also had checked with Brian Weaver of GBodyParts.com to verify this beforehand.

According to the Buick parts book, it is correct for 1982-1987 Gbody cars. Keep in mind, AC Delco is in the parts business, not the restoration business, so it appears they also produced this same identical radiator cap leaving off the words “Made in England.” What strikes me strange is, why they didn’t list where it was made since the space on the cap existed for it?

Any rate, it's a simple thing to rectify since we have a good supply of used ones. It is also one of those little neat visible items making your car original again. Our Part #7151. Originally we only listed it for the 1986-1987 Turbo Regals, but it is correct for all 1982-1987 Regals models! There is no reproduction AC Delco radiator cap I am aware of that has the words "Made in England" on it. It's GM part #6410427. If you run that number, you probably will not get the version that says "Made in England," which was original equipment.

What impressed me about the cars at this event was, not only the quality of the cars, but the fact so many of them had a lot of related literature and original paper work with them. That is becoming the thing to do when restoring and showing your car.

PHOTO 1 - The top photo shows the description flyer on a 1983 Hurst/Olds that only had 6,900 original miles on it.

The top right photo shows the AC Delco radiator cap with the words "Made in England."

The lower left photo shows the car not only featured the original window sticker, but the flyer showing the actual sale price!

The lower right photo shows the three-ring binder in the trunk complete with the original Colorado license plate from the first owner. This binder had every sticker that was on the windshield before it was prepped for delivery, and every receipt for every payment the owner made on the car. You can see the payment receipts in this last photo. The binder was over four inches thick!

Most of us would make room in our garage for this type of car.

The neat feature in these 1983 Hurst/Olds was the newly developed Lightning Rod shifter set up. Over the years, I have seen some installed in Turbo Regals. This set up can be very costly to buy today because of the limited supply and demand.

PHOTO 2 - In the top photo we show a unique item on the same car as in the Photo 1. It's the factory label, which states, “DO NOT MOVE THESE LEVERS BEFORE READING THE HURST/OLDS OWNER'S MANUAL."

In the lower photo we show the dash cluster. Here is one highpoint where the Olds model outshines the Turbo Buick! Full gauges! On the floor, which is barely visible, is GM cardboard protectors so nobody steps on the carpet!

Hurst was banking on the fact that if people saw it in the production Hurst/Olds cars, they would want to buy it for their Camaro or Firebird or Ford. Unfortunately, performance during the mid-1980s was not at the high water mark it is today, so I don’t think sales was especially strong for the Lightning Rod shifters outside of the Hurst/Olds production.

PHOTO 3 - The top left photo shows one of the unique features that Hurst did on the 1969 models - adopting a racing-style mirror for both exterior doors. I believe it was only used on these cars, making it very rare today to find an original.

In this top right photo we show the trunk lid and spoiler of the 1969 Hurst Olds. I like the way the end tips are gold and the center stripe panel on the trunk lid does not go to the very edge at either end.

In this lower left photo we show the bucket seat in a 1974 or 1975 Hurst Olds model. Not only did it have the optional swivel bucket seat, but both the base inner cushion and the back inner cushion could be reversed (one side is off-white and the other side is black.) Pretty clever and it was something I never knew before.

In the lower right photo we show a one-of-a-kind 1974 Hurst Olds four-door sedan that had bucket seats!

Photo 4 - The top left photo shows a close-up of the trunk jacking instructions in the trunk of the 1983 Hurst/Olds. It should look familiar to most people since it appears to be identical to the label in our cars.

The top right photo shows the spare. This is where Olds did things a little different than Buick did when they had the optional 15-inch wheels. According to the owner of this 1983 Hurst/Olds and according to someone I talked to that worked at the plant, if the car was equipped with a posi (G80 code) then it got the taller spare. If it did NOT get the G80 posi section, it got the standard size tire as seen here. The reason being, if you had a posi (limited slip), it was critical that both rear tires were the same height to avoid damage.

One of the rarest labels associated with the Hurst Olds is similar to what is found on the GNX and that is, a label referring to the company that modified the car prior to ownership. In the lower left photo we show label stating that in May of 1975 this vehicle was altered by Hurst Performance Inc. Assuming they noted each month of production, it means it would require a reproduction label for almost every month they worked on these cars.

They had magazine writer, Bill Rothermel, at the event who also took photos throughout the day. In the lower right photo we show one of the pictures of three invited guest he took at the event - Don Glover who worked on the Hurst/Olds project at Hurst is on the left, myself in the middle, and Jack “Doc” Watson who headed up the Hurst Performance division in Michigan and worked on the Hurst/Olds is on the far right.

We'll have more next week as we spotlight the similarities between the Hurst/Olds models and the Turbo Regal models.

THINKING OF THAT DREAM JOB TO HAVE -

Here is my short list of three dream jobs I would consider.

Any more on TV there seems to be a lot of shows associated with cooking and eating. Years ago none of us would have thought that the words "cupcakes" and "war" would be used in the same sentence! You have to love the job that Guy Fieri has on the Food Network. He drives around in a red early Camaro convertible going to various "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives." That has to be a fun job, long as you can keep your weight in check. Not only does he get to drive a nice older car and see the country, but he also gets to eat virtually anywhere and get paid.

Another job I thought would be interesting would be a film critic. You get to see almost every film then write about it.

Last, but certainly not least being in the automotive field, a magazine writer that gets to drive virtually every new car that comes down the pike. Maybe in the 1980s it was a pretty dull job, but in recent years, almost every car company has come out with some interesting cars.

I am sure other jobs come to mind but those are three I think some of us would consider.

WE HAVE ANOTHER GNX DASH AVAILABLE -

This dash is just like the GNX. It has all new Stewart Warner gauges with sending units as needed. It includes a new upper speedometer cable, directions with a copy of the original AS blueprints, a good used original gauge bezel, new applique, most important a pre-cut stock dash bezel. In other words, this is a complete kit ready to install. You do not have to cut any part of your dash, you simply remove your dash and drop this one in. All the gauges are all pre-fit properly.

The only item you will have to buy to complete it is the proper plug-and-play harness, which is available from World of Motorworks. You have to specify if you have an analog dash or a digital dash when you order the harness.

The price for this complete GNX-style dash is $1,995 plus shipping.

NEW PARTS & NEW LINKS –

We now carry the Reproduction GM-style Front and Rear Bumper Filler Panels. Here's our complete description.

1984-1987 Buick Regal (2-Door Models) -
Reproduction GM-STYLE FRONT & REAR BUMPER FILLER PANELS

Over time, these front and rear filler panels deteriorate or crack.

The front body bumper fillers are the flexible parts located between the front bumper and the front portion of the car on either side of the grille opening. Over the years, original front body bumper filler extensions can crack and crumble due to heat and age. They can also lose their shape and droop. The original GM version had 2 pieces; a left and a right.

The rear body bumper fillers are the flexible parts located between the body and the rear bumper, across the back of the car. Over the years, original rear body bumper filler extensions can crack and crumble due to heat and age. They can also lose their shape and droop. The original GM version had 2 pieces; a left and a right.

The factory original GM front and rear body bumper fillers are no longer available.

We can finally offer a quality set of reproduction front and rear fillers which closely copy the original chemical makeup used originally by GM. These look and feel are just like the original GM units, but with a better chemical composition.

The new molds for this project were built off the last GM production runs of the original filler panels. These new panels do not have the pock marks in the fillers and are ready to scuff and paint. These look and feel like the GM originals.

The same size steel is used behind the fillers and, instead of bare metal that rusts quickly, these are black EDP coated to resist corrosion. Since the material is a TPO compound, a qualified body shop will need to use an adhesion promoter.

Fillers have been tested for fitted, and the fit is comparable to panels on an original 6,000-mile Grand National.

By purchasing these OE-quality fillers, the amount of expense in the preparation, fit, and paint work is greatly reduced over the various aftermarket bumper fillers. Most of the other aftermarket filler panels require sanding to fill pot marks and some body lines have to be sanded for a sharper quality look.

In order to give customers a choice, we are offering these and the ABS plastic filler panels. We realize not everyone will be building/restoring a high-end show car, which would require these new OE-style reproduction bumper fillers.

NOTE - If you are interested in the ABS plastic filler panels, see Part #7152 for the ABS plastic front bumper fillers and #7067 for the ABS plastic rear bumper fillers.

NOTE - Manufacturer’s warranty only applies if these filler panels are properly prepped and installed by a qualified auto body shop using an adhesion promoter.

These are excellent replacement items for any exterior restoration.

1984-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
Reproduction TIMING CHAIN COVER with New Timing Tab

NOTE - This timing chain cover will fit all Buick small V6 engines (198, 215, 225, 231, 300, 350, and 400 engines,) not just the 1984-1987 Turbo Regals.

Over time, an original timing chain cover can become worn or leak. If you are rebuilding your motor, it is the perfect time to go with a brand new timing chain cover.

This is made by TA Performance and comes complete with a new installed neoprene seal. For added strength, this seal is secured by three screws. Final machining to BETTER-than-Original-Equipment (OE) standards is done at TA Performance. As a result, this cover is of a higher quality than the original timing chain cover.

Each timing chain cover comes with a new timing tab. Some original timing chain covers to not have a removable timing tab.

NOTE - We recommend this cover be installed by a qualified mechanic.

WE GOOFED -

Be nice if I could say we made the error on purpose to see what readers would catch the error, but the truth be told we didn’t. The code on the trunk ID label we listed for the factory GM astroroof it should be "CF5" not CC1. The code CC1 is for T-Tops.

Unlike your bank, we do admit we make mistakes from time to time!

1984-1987 Buick Regal (All Models) -
FACTORY GM ASTROROOF Reproduction SEALS (2) SET

This is a reproduction of both the actual glass seal and the surrounding pan seal, sold as a set only.

First, you need to be sure your car has a factory GM astroroof, sometimes referred to as a “sun roof.” The factory astroroof will have the code “CC5” on the trunk ID label. If it does not have this code, you probably have an aftermarket astroroof and these seals will NOT fit.

These seals are “MADE IN THE USA” and are superior to what GM had made originally. It has a firm compound with a smooth outer jacket that is cast into the coating. It is not wrapped like GM, which is why the GM seals wrinkle. This allows the glass to ride on a smooth surface. This gains better glass coverage, which means better sealing and less resistance on a 25+-year-old motor.

The pan seal is larger and wraps around the roof support for a better seal on the roof structure. They have a smoother surface, which allows the glass to seal better to the seal. It will not grab or bind. The pan seal is the other seal associated with the astroroof.

NOTE - We recommend the installation be done by a qualified shop.

One helpful tip is to take an air hose and make sure all the drain holes are clear of debris. These drain holes are located on the corners which are visible when the glass is in the open position. If the drain holes become clogged, water can back up and ruin the surrounding headliner.

Another nice finishing touch for any exterior restoration.

1984-1987 Buick Turbo Regal with Floor Shift -
THEFT DETERRENT LOCK-OUT PLATE

Since collar locks are now selling for over $150 or more, there aren’t many options available to secure your car with a locking device.

Theft is still a major concern for owners of these cars. While no theft deterrent is fool proof, this is a simple method to block the console shifter from being moved out of PARK.

This new lock-out plate is machined from a solid block of aluminum, and then a lock cylinder is installed. Next a machined tapered tab is installed on the bottom of the lock tumbler, so when it is engaged, it locks the plate to the console. There is enough of a gap for the tab to engage against the top of the ribbed plastic shifter cover and locks against the bottom of the console metal piece. It will not harm the factory plastic ribbed slider that surrounds the chrome shifter lever. The aluminum block is wide enough to over lap the top plate as well so it can't be pushed down.

There are no wires and no alarms to worry about. You simple put it into position, turn the key to engage the plate, and remove the key. Even if your car is equipped with an electric alarm system this is a second line of defense that is also visible.

Of course, like any theft deterrent, given enough time and patience, a determine thief could defeat it, but it will certainly prevent theft in some cases.

This is a simple concept... it prevents the car from being taken out of PARK, so the car can't be rolled or pushed.

I keep one in my console for whenever I have to leave the car parked.

Unit comes with two keys.

Another excellent theft deterrent to help keep your car in your possession.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE - We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected].
