BUICK LITERATURE - PART 12

Because I went to Fall Carlisle, we are postponing the Part 12 of the Buick Literature series until next week.

This week I wanted to share some of what I saw at Carlisle. Watch for more Buick Literature part 12 next week.

BY THE NUMBERS -

Carlisle swap meet sits on 102 acres and has just over 8,000 vendor spots. The Wednesday-through-Sunday fall event draws over 90,000 spectators. Virtually, anything car related can be found at this annual fall event. This is a yearly ritual for not only spectators but for vendors, many of which have attended since the event was first started in the mid 1970s.

PHOTO 1 - I did see this one 1987 Grand National for sale. Car was all original, except for tires and battery. Car had T-Tops with 13,700 actual miles. The asking price that first day at Carlisle was $26,400. The lower photo shows a vendor with some Buick literature.

Finding anything Turbo Buick related the last several years has been extremely difficult. This particular inside vendor clearly recognized the value of Turbo Buick literature. He had lined up 7 of the various books that Buick and Buick Motorsports had printed during the late 1980s. You can clearly see the power six logo on the various book covers.

What is amazing to me, is with 1987 Regals production over 1986 models it has been years since I have found even one original 1987 Regal Owners Manual for sale! You can find 1986 and earlier ones, but for whatever reason original 1987 Owners Manuals are scarce and very pricey from vendors that specialize in literature.

I remember attending the spring and fall Carlisle meets back in the late 1980s and passing on all the take offs from ASC like the Grand National analog dashes, and original Grand National sets of tires and wheels! (I never wanted to haul them back to my truck!) I make it a point to attend on the first day each time to avoid the massive crowds and traffic.

PHOTO 2 - This has to be one of the most unique cars that was for sale at the Carlisle event. It was a twenty-year project based on a 1958 Oldsmobile 4-door sedan, called the "Jukemobile." The car was show quality. The owner/builder is currently building two other ones. He had this one for sale for $36,000. He has been a mobile disc-jockey since 1973. For more info - www.goldengup.com

PHOTO 3 - If looking for some company at night when you watch TV, the entire Simpson family in actual size was being offered by this one vendor. If you where a child during the 1960s, the metal crossing guard sign to the right of the Simpsons will bring back memories. Remember, roadside maps? This vendor (in the lower photo) had them all neatly laid out in state order.

PHOTO 4 - The upper photo features some very nice SUV seats that must have been take offs as they all looked brand new. The lower photos show some rare items. At the top are original brass carburetors, probably early 1920s vintage. In the center was a clock from a Hupmobile, which I don't believe was made for very many years. The bottom box had a pair of original Cord lights.

Even with the option to buy off the internet (notably eBay), for me it is the thrill of the hunt walking around these events. It still is fun and, at my age, probably good exercise.

I think I have been lucky enough to attend at least one of Carlisle's major events every year since they first started.

MINI CONTEST -

We did not get any winners last week to our mini contest.

So, we have listed the previous clues and we have added a few more clues.

Even if you emailed your 2 guesses last week, you are still eligible to try 2 more guesses this week since we had no winners!

In a recent Inner Circle, we covered information about the hardbound GNX books that Buick offered. This idea was not unique just for the GNX. A few years later, another car manufacturer came out with a special new model and did a similar thing by offering two slightly different hardbound books related to this new model.

One book was sold to the general public and ran about 50 pages. The other one book was specific for the owners of these cars. This version was slightly different in overall size and ran over 60 pages.

Today neither is available. Of course, the one that went to the original car owners is valued a lot higher since fewer were printed.

This car has ceased production a few years back.

Car is a foreign car model.

Early models were 5-speeds, later models were 6-speeds.

Due to low production, the later models are extremely rare today.

Name the car model I am referring to.

Here are the rules:

No turbo company related employees are eligible.

You get 2 guesses.

To be eligible, your 2 guesses must be emailed directly to me personally - [email protected]

The first 2 correct guesses will receive one of the limited copies of the posters shown in Photo 4 of last week's issue (09-29-2010).

ONE GREAT INVESTMENT THAT WILL PAY OFF -

One of the most recognized performance cars that were featured in the 1960s movies Goldfinger and Thunderball was the 1964 DB5 Aston Martin driven by Sean Connery. He will always be remembered as James Bond.

The current owner, Jerry Lee, purchased the famous Aston Martin on a whim for a mere $12,000 from the Aston Martin Company. Apparently at the time the company didn't have a clue as to its real value. Mr. Lee actually built a "James Bond Room" in his home for the car. Over the years, he would often demonstrate the various gadgets for his guests. This car only has about 30,000 miles on it and everything is in working order. They made two cars for the movie and the other one was stolen years ago and has never been found, although pieces have surfaced for sale over the years.

This car will soon go to auction and will have a world-wide appeal because of its history. It is expected to fetch $5 million or more. The auction is at the end of this month being handled by -RMauctions.com This gives you plenty of time to line up your credit line now with your bank.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which ones you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]

URGENT REQUEST - WE NEED TURBO CORES! -

We need stock 1986-1987 Turbo Regal turbos for cores.

For each complete turbo you send us, you will received either a check for $75 for or a Letter of Credit for $100 for any parts listed on our website. Just specify which you want for your turbo.

By sending us complete cores, it enables us to supply other owners with rebuilt units and also our TA 49 versions. The TA 49 turbos we sell require the use of the stock exhaust housing. By using that section, no low-end torque is lost in regular street driving.

THANK YOU for helping to keep the parts available for other Turbo Regal owners.

SEVERAL NEW PARTS FROM US -

The special S hose was discontinued by GM several months ago and is unique for the 1986-1987 Turbo Regals. You now have two reproduction options to choose from to replace this hose. Both are in stock.

Part #7299 - This hose is rubber, is 100% exact and the price is $39.95. We also have the same hose available made in black silicone.

Part #7300 - This hose is made in silicone and is more of a shiny black in color. Since it is made in silicone, it can last longer than a regular rubber hose. The price of this hose is $29.95.

Here is the complete description for both hoses.

1986-1987 Turbo Regal -
REPRODUCTION BY-PASS "S" HOSE and UPGRADED SILICONE BY-PASS HOSE

We stock 2 options for this small "S" shaped hose that goes from the front of the intake manifold (alongside the thermostat housing) to the back portion of the water pump. This special molded hose is no longer available from GM and is not available in any auto parts stores. It’s unique to the Turbo Regals only.

Because of its location, this hose is subject to heat and usually cracks or splits. The hose is easy to install.

This reproduction hose (Part #7299) is made of the same rubber and exact shape as the original GM hose, so it looks original. The other reproduction hose (Part #7300) is made in silicone (which will last longer than rubber) and the hose has a shiny black appearance.

We highly recommend you purchase one or two to carry in your trunk, like some other emergency items.

1986-1987 Turbo Regal and 1989 Turbo Trans Am -
REPRODUCTION STAINLESS STEEL ENGINE COOLANT LINES

These reproduction stainless steel engine coolant lines are powder coated glossy black and are identical to the pair of factory coolant lines found on the passenger's side of the engine.

Over a period of time these lines can rust from the inside out. If you ever have reason to remove them, they easily get bent or cracked.

These lines are made in the U.S.A. and are unique for the years shown.

ALWAYS IN A BUYING POSITION WORKS -

Got any turbo parts you are not using? Why not cash them in for parts you need with a Letter of Credit. Simply email me a list - [email protected] -

Also, we are still buying dead or partially dead 1984-1987 Turbo Regals under $4,000 that are within 250 to 350 miles of our location.

GM PARTS UPDATE -

It appears that the GM supply of the factory 1986-1987 GM factory original molded boost line kits are dwindling and may already have disappeared from GM's warehouses inventory. We currently have a decent supply of them.

This is a very critical part, for any 1986-1987 Turbo Regal, since it is needed to control boost. They have 3 specially formed hoses with a special size diameter T in between two of the molded hoses. These also have the GM wording on them.

Over a period of time, heat can cause the hoses to swell and crack. While they last, we have them available for $44.95 plus shipping, Part #6644. Supplies are limited.

Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure™ Walk - Carrie Kirban

This is a really great cause to find The Cure for breast cancer.

Could you or anyone that you might know please help us participate in the walk next weekend. We only have 1 more week to raise the money.
