GM LICENSED REPRODUCTION DOOR JAMB VIN DATA DECALS - continued -
We should get our initial samples of the 1984-1987 GM Licensed Door Jamb VIN Data Decals this week. We are working out the final ordering information for approval by ECS, so we can start to take retail orders from our customers.
Dave has suggested on our orders he will put an invisible coating over the face, so most cleaning solvents will not smear them, which can happen to the originals. Again, this coating will be invisible and will not be detectable.
In many cases, if your current door jamb VIN data decal is not readable, you need to determine the 17-digit VIN number and the production date. The month refers to the month of manufacture.
To my knowledge, the only place on your car you can get the month and year of manufacture is from the Body Number Plate. This is the metal stamped plate that can be found under your driver’s side wiper arm. You may know this as the “cowl tag plate.”
Most Body Number Plates are painted black to blend in, so it may be difficult to read the embossed codes accurately. You can lightly sand the raise codes so you can read it better. It is the first group of letters and numbers, which are arranged in a group of 4 in the top line. It is this group that tells you the year, month, and week that your car was manufactured.
The first letter stands for the year of production. Example - the letter D is 1983, E is 1984, F is 1985, G is 1986 and H is 1987.
The next two digits are the month of the year. It is these codes you need for the door jamb data VIN decal. It represents the year and month of production. The last letter, which would be A, B, C, D, or E, stands for the week of production for that month. No month has over 5 weeks, so there would be no “F” designation. The code representing the week is not on the door jamb VIN data decal.
Keep in mind, 1984 production started in the fall of 1983. You could have a 1986 Turbo Regal with a production date of the fall of 1985. On the door jamb VIN data decal it would read month then year - example 10/83 would be for October 1983. I believe every real GNX will have the word GNX stamped on this Body Number Plate.
PHOTO 1 - The photo on the left shows the cover of the 1986 General Motors Body Service Manual for Buick, Oldsmobile, and Cadillac. Each year had a different color book. Unlike the huge Service Manual, this book is about 2 inches thick and covers everything related to the Body, as the title suggests. The first chapter covers Model Identification and Fasteners, which is where the illustrations and definitions are for the Body Number Plate. The photo on the right shows the page with the illustration of the Body Number Plate. This is where I obtained the information to provide you with figuring out the month and year of manufacture for a 1984-1987 Turbo Regal.
In the next 2 photos I show 4 different Buick Regal Body Number Plates that I had removed from Turbo Regals that I dismantled several years ago. For some odd reason, I removed and saved them! Each one is for a different year, as noted by the letters E, F, G, and H.
PHOTO 2 - The left body number plate reads E05B, which would be 1984, May 5th month, 2nd week. The right body number plate reads F05B, which would be 1985, May 5th month, 2nd week. It’s strange that I have 2 plates made exactly one year apart!
PHOTO 3 - The left body number plate reads G05A, which would be 1986, also May 5th month, 1st week. The right body number plate reads H02B, which would be 1987, February 2nd month, the 2nd week.
The second line of copy on the body number plate refers to the paint code and states it was done in lacquer.
The third line the second group of letters numbers refers to the seat option. You can see the code AR9 on 2 of the body number plates. This code is for the seat option in your car. The AR9 code would be the mostly popular one since it was for the bucket seat option. Another Body Number Plate shows code A65 is for the notchback seats. The rare seat code is AQ9, which is shown in the left in Photo 2. That code stands for Lear Sieglar seats! This is for the 1984 Body Number plate when Lear Sieglar seats where used. Even though Lear Sieglar seats were bucket seats, these had a different code on the Body Number Plate. On the F06A plate in the photo you see the CC1 code in the bottom left corner. That code represents the T-Top option.
So, in quick review, if you are missing the door jamb data decal or it’s not readable, you need to determine the date of manufacture.
The 5 digits after the built date refer to the GM division, 4 is for Buick. All 4 plates shown in Photo 2 and Photo 3 are for the G-body cars. “J47” represents the 2-door coupe.
The letter by itself is for the plant. All our Body Number Plates will have a P for Pontiac. Pontiac was the final assembly point, even though production started in Flint originally. The remaining 6 digits on the top line refer to unit number. I can’t explain this number, as it must somehow be used to track each particular car and what related options the car would receive during assembly. Again, I am guessing.
Each GM door decal has a specific GM part number. In each case, the part number is 8 digits followed by either the letter A or B. The number for the 1984 is 14065978A and B. The 1985-1986 is 14085204A and B. The 1987 is 10080812A and B. There is a possibility that some of the 1987 cars may have had the 1985-1986 style door data VIN decals. This is why it’s critical to indicate what the GM part number is for your door data VIN decals. I wanted to repeat these critical GM part numbers, so you can double check if they agree with the numbers on your Turbo Regal.
I suggest you print the above paragraphs, so you have them handy to refer to in the future. I know from looking at many 1984-1986 Turbo Regals, those original door jamb decals are faded badly. You will need to decode your Body Number Plate to get the month and year of manufacture of your Turbo Regal in order to get a correct reproduction Door Jamb VIN data decal from us.
The 1987 format seemed to hold up better than the early ones do.
BODY NUMBER PLATE MEMORIES -
If you ever served in the military, which I did, you received a pair of dog tags. I still have mine. It was made using the same type of equipment that stamps out military dog tags that also makes these Body Number Plates.
The stamping on dog tags is not raised like the Body Number Plates, but indented. I actually have several years experience of running those machines when I was 12-13 years old. The machine is called a “Graphotype.” It resembled a very heavy-duty floor model typewriter except, instead of stamping letters on paper, it was stamping letters on metal plates used as address masters. These metal plates were basically the same length as your car’s Body Number plate, but not as tall and shaped slightly different as they went in long narrow trays.
The plates were also thicker metal because they had to be reused each time for addressing.
Of course, if you made a mistake, the plate was thrown out as it could not be corrected!
I learned to type at a very early age! At the same time my Dad also had an addressograph machine that these embossed metal plates would run through. It would imprint envelopes with the names and addresses.
I would run these 2 machines for several summers in the basement of our house. It was not unusual for me to do 5,000 runs on the addressograph machine for a company. My Dad did massive advertising mailings for several major Philadelphia insurance companies and Savings and Loan banks. Back then, my Dad had an outside company do the actual stuffing and mailing.
As a 13-year-old, I never gave it much thought how dangerous these machines can be, especially if I was to slip. It could have caught my hand under the arm that came down to emboss the type into the metal plates! I do remember at least once it did catch the tip of my one finger.
IT’S THAT TIME OF THE YEAR FOR SEVERAL OF THE CLASSIC CAR AUCTIONS -
One of the big Classic Car Auctions took place this past weekend in Arizona, the Barrett Jackson Auction. According to Greg Glenn who was there, a GNX with 300 miles sold for $115,000. According to Greg the car was not Kirban crisp looking compared to Turbo cars he and I have sold. The GNX had a broken power antenna and needed a new headliner and visors redone. The car was locked, so he did not know if the numbered book or GNX jacket were included in the deal. The original GNX jacket and numbered GNX book can be costly to obtain, if not included with the GNX. I don’t believe any Grand Nationals was at this auction.
The one car that garnered most of the hype this year was the “Smokey and the Bandit” Trans Am. Burt Reynolds even appeared when the car was being auctioned off.
This was well documented as being used in the publicity of the movie. It was totally restored. This car fetched a cool $500,000.
Several of those vintage year Firebird Trans Ams fetched very good money this year. It would appear they are the up and coming cars of value. A 1979 Trans Am with a mere 7 miles on it sold for $170 grand. Frankly, I can’t bring myself to refer to them as muscle cars. They had great styling in the late 1970s and early 1980s, but acceleration and power on tap was not their strong suit.
Locally, to us was the Philadelphia Auto Show and one of the most expensive used Fiats was auctioned off. It was the one that carried Pope Francis when he was in Philadelphia last year. This unique Fiat sold for $82,000 and was purchased by Chapman Auto Dealers. It will be on display at his Horsham dealership, which is about 20 minutes south of our office in Plumsteadville.
HUMBLE TEXAS -
To most of us old-timer Turbo owners, Humble, Texas is best remembered as the home of Lawrence and Janice Conley and their Turbo Regal car called “Tweaked.” The company that bought up the rights to the name and all the remaining parts to the DeLorean plans to make new DeLoreans in Humble, Texas, using leftover original parts.
A recent law was passed in 2015 that allows small businesses to make a few replica motor vehicles that resemble the appearance of cars produced 25 years ago or more. This law even allows companies to install engines from any car make or model.
After reading this paragraph, I am sure a light bulb went off in your head saying, “I wonder if a company with deep pockets would start to make 1987 Grand Nationals from scratch?”
Maybe I am out of touch, but the original DeLorean just was not a car I would think be a good investment in the long run. It probably owes a lot of its popularity to the movie “Back to the Future.” On the other hand, I could see bringing back the 1964 Mustang and the 1963 Corvette. Either of these cars could easily be fitted with later drive trains and values would exceed the cost factor in years to come, if done right. Also, both of these cars would draw a much larger market, in my opinion.
MORE FROM MY ARCHIVES -
Last week we wrote briefly on the 1986 Buick Press Kit. The original Buick Press Kit for 1986 stated that the Regal T-Type would have Lear Siegler bucket seats. This option code “AQ9,” as noted on the Body Number plate, was a $600 option. The regular AR9 cloth bucket seats were just $195. It goes on to state the 1986 Grand National had a unique performance tuned suspension.
I think most would agree they could have done a lot better with the suspension than they did. Leaving out 4 and sometimes 6 lower body bushings seems like a strange tactic when you have a car that builds so much torque at low rpm.
The big news related to the Grand National was not even mentioned in the 1986 Buick Press Kit, the LeSabre Grand National, which came out later in the year.
More next week from my Archives.

NEW PRODUCTS FROM US -
1984-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
TURBO REGAL CAR SHOW DISPLAY BOARD
FEATURING AN ACTUAL SIZE FIBERGLASS HOOD SCOOP
Here is a clever idea, if you show your pride and joy or want a unique display in your office or garage.
I can't take full credit for this idea. I was at a show and saw our customers, Dave and Brenda Romasko’s unique display sign (shown in our photo.) They actually cut a steel Turbo Regal hood that was damaged to create his display sign with his car.
Basing the piece on an exact replica of the hood scoop from a Turbo Regal is a novel approach to make your own unique sign. It’s ideal to hang in your garage as a display.
The piece measures 25-3/4" wide and 30-3/4" tall, weighs less than 4 pounds, and the quality is excellent.
If it ever gets scratched, you can compound it out. The piece can be painted to match the color of your car.
This is made exclusively for us by Spoolfool, the company that makes the high-quality one-piece rear filler panel and the front filler panels we sell.
It is made in glossy-black gelcoat fiberglass, so it’s lightweight. Although it looks great as it is, you can have a sign company lay out any information and pictures of your car and position it on this display.
We suggest you also purchase the sfi emblems, part #6556, to highlight the original scoop area. The emblems make the hood scoop look complete.
You could fabricate a frame to hold it, like the Romasko’s sign. You can purchase a folding display easel (Staples or Amazon) to stand it up next to your car or to display it on a shelf. You could fabricate something on the back to hang it on the wall.
NOTE - You may also be interested in this related part - #6556 Reproduction “3.8 SFI TURBO” Hood Emblems (2).
NOTE - Because the finish is so shiny, it is very difficult to photograph, but the quality is excellent. The piece is actually a rectangle. We had to photograph it at an angle to be able to see the shape of the scoop. Our photos show the display board with and without the sfi emblems, part #6556 (which must be purchased separately,) and the Romasko’s car show display.
An excellent custom touch to enhance your car show display, office or garage.

STOCK REPLACEMENT REAR END COVERS -
POWDER-COATED GLOSSY BLACK OR CHROME-PLATED - AND HARDWARE (10) SET
These stock replacement metal rear end covers come complete with a drain plug, new bolts and gasket. Rear end covers closely resemble the stock rear end cover. We offer two finishes - powder-coated glossy black and chrome-plated. The hardware is coated to help prevent rust.
Either cover will fit the stock 8.5 rear end (10-bolt) found on all original 1984-1987 Turbo Regals. The powder-coated glossy black cover is an excellent choice to retain a stock appearance.
It measures about 1-1/2″ deep. This will clear the factory crossflow muffler.
NOTE - Because of the shiny finishes, the covers are difficult to photograph.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -
We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.
If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]

We have heard from a couple people that have had problems with the links in our Inner Circle.
When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.
Most people having problems are using Internet Explorer… If you are having issues with links, try another browser to see if it works.
You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be use you are using the current version.
