BUICK PRODUCT INFORMATION –
As we have mentioned before Buick, to all its dealers sent out various information Bulletins pertaining to the specific model year. One such Product Information Bulletin was dated 11-6-85 and the subject listed was the 1986½ LeSabre Grand National. Buick ended up producing just 112 of the 1986½ LeSabre Grand Nationals.
This Product Information Bulletin gave the price structure for what this option added to the cost of the 1986, which was the first model year for the new front-wheel-drive platform. The Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) was $1,237.
A few unusual features included 15 by 6 aluminum wheels, dual outlet exhaust, side window molding that covered part of the rear quarter glass, and embroidered front floor mats. The embroidery consisted of a partial power 6 logo in solid red. It makes you wonder why they did not offer embroidered floor mats for the popular 1986 and 1987 Grand Nationals and the GNX? Because this 1986 LeSabre was front-wheel-drive, the fitted front floor mats are wider than what would have been in the Regal rear-wheel-drive models.
The other interesting notation on this Product Information Bulletin - BLACK code #41 and also WHITE code #40 for its exterior paint codes. I never ever saw a white 1986½ LeSabre Grand National. I am wondering if perhaps the white version never saw production?
Many of you reading this remember that years ago we owned one of these unique LeSabre Grand Nationals. Actually, we owned 2 of them. One we restored and later sold to a customer in Texas for $10,000. They were non-turbo 3.8 SFI powered. It is a comfortable driving car with the F41 Gran Touring suspension. Also, it’s the only model Grand National where you did not have to worry about car theft. The fender badges were very similar to the turbo-fed Regal body Grand Nationals, only the power 6 logo portion was solid red not two tone.
It’s hard to predict the values of this model Grand National. Like the later 1987-1990 Le Sabre T-Types, their values have not increased as rapidly as the Regal body Turbos. In the summer of 2018 Old Cars Report Price Guide it lists the 1986½ LeSabre Grand National for $10,500 for #2 condition and $15,000 for a #1 condition. For comparison, it lists the 1986 Regal body Grand National at $26,250 for #2 condition and $37,500 for a #1 condition car. With the current virus situation, these numbers may be on the strong side unless you have a very low-mileage one that looks brand new.
Perhaps a fairer comparison would be the 1987 LeSabre T-Type. It shows a #2 condition at $4,340 and a #1 condition at $6,200. These prices for the summer of 2018 seem more in line. Because of the virus, the book store I usually go to has been closed for the last 6 weeks.
Another interesting Product Information Bulletin was dated 3-20-87. The subject was Designers Accent Paint Colors. This Bulletin announced they cancelled the brown and light brown Designers Accent Paint treatment for the remainder of the 1987 model year. The reason stated was it would reduce overall build complexity and help improve Regal paint quality.
I think a good portion of Grand National owners that have cars with original paint wished that Buick did a far better job on the paint jobs. As for eliminating the two-tone brown combination, it probably was a smart move as it was not a popular choice among Regal owners. This Bulletin shows proof that it was cancelled 3-20-87.
PHOTO 1 – These show the 2 Product Information Bulletins. Bulletin on the left shows the specifications on the 1986½ LeSabre Grand National. Bulletin on the right shows the cancellation of the two-tone brown and light brown paint scheme on the Regals.
A HUMOROUS APPROACH TO REMOVING THE STEERING COLUMN FROM A REGAL –
The other day Stephen McCarty, who cuts our lawn, was at our house to cut our lawn. Behind my pole building I have a regular 1985 Regal and a Chrysler mini-van. I use the mini-van to store all the usual outdoor lawn tools. The Regal is also used for basic storage and to test parts.
I wanted Stephen to remove the entire steering column for a possible project I had in mind. This is due in part because the recent demand for Jeep shafts has been overwhelming, Fortunately, I do have one source that is able to send me some every 7-10 days.
The Jeep shaft has metal joints at both ends, whereas the Regal lower shaft where it attaches to the steering box retains a fiber-like rag joint. This rag joint becomes a weak part over time and can cause play in the steering.
He first removed the bolts at the top and base of the lower shaft. He then removed the bolts that secured the column to the bracket under the dash, as well as the bracket itself.
So, in Photo 2 you can see firsthand how NOT to remove a steering column if it’s in the car you are restoring.
PHOTO 2 – The top left photo shows a close-up of the plastic shield pulled back to expose the rag joint attached to the steering box. The top right photo shows Stephen hooking up a tow strap to the steering wheel and to the back of his powerful riding lawn mower. Prior to this, we tried in vain to pull the column out from inside the car by hand.
The bottom left photo shows Stephen riding his mower trying to pull the column out. The front of the mower actually lifted up! The bottom right photo shows the quickest method to disconnect the mass of wires that attach to the steering column under the dash. We then undid the bolts to the boot under the dash to the firewall. The column then came lose. What I thought was a simple project took over an hour! It was a bit of mid-week entertainment!
MORE USED PARTS FOR SALE –
The following parts are listed for sale under the Rare Parts section. I have pictured the 4 different groups here so you can view them first hand.
PHOTO 3 – The top left photo shows a diagnostic cap, 4 brand new chrome vale stems, console handle clip, actuator c-clip, and complete set of radio knobs. The top right photo shows a brand new 1986-1987 crank sensor (missing the bolt), a used brake switch, and all 4 factory radio plugs. The bottom left photo shows a brake switch, both factory powermaster hoses, and all 4 factory radio plugs. The bottom right photo shows 20 used black GNX lug caps, original Made in England radiator cap, original coil pack decal, 4 new chrome vale stems and one shifter handle clip.
MIA’S BRACELETS FROM VIETNAM –
The other day my youngest sister Dawn called me. (I have 3 sisters and 1 brother). She recently went thru her memory box that she had saved all these years. She mentioned that she had saved an actual metal MIA bracelet that she wore in 1970-1971 time frame when she was 9 years old. She was curious, so she researched the name - SPEC 5 RONALD SCHULTZ 7-21-70 - and discovered he was declared dead in 1978. His name is on the Vietnam wall. The story is he was injured in battle and while making a quick escape, he grabbed on to the outer rail of a rescue helicopter only to lose his grip and fall 400 feet into the dense Vietnam forest. His body was never recovered.
I told my sister that I would be honored to have that bracelet to put with my Vietnam display items. She then said that she even have a few letters from me written while I was in Vietnam. When I was in Vietnam she was only 6 or 7 years old. I always kid her and tell her I only vaguely remember her back then! Partly because within a few weeks of coming back from Vietnam I got married and never lived at home again.
She said she would send me the bracelet and a few of the letters I wrote her. I then asked her “Did I really rent her one of my cars when she was in high school?” She said, “Yes, for $25 a month.” My mother was against me charging her! Dawn said when she was a senior she used to drive our sister Diane’s Dodge Charger to school and work after school. Diane was away at college. Problems developed because no one told her the importance of checking the oil. She drove the car hard, burning the tires from traffic lights on occasion. The Charger engine eventually failed due to lack of oil.
So, for $25 a month I rented her a really nice little 1963 Pontiac LeMans. It was easy on gas and she remembers renting it probably for about 9 months. I was buying and selling cars back in the 1970s without the benefit on a sales license! She worked at a restaurant and on the weekends as a nurse’s aide at a nursing home.
PHOTO 4 – The top left photo shows the actual metal MIA bracelet that my sister Dawn wore in 1970-1971. The top right photo is a picture I sent her of the Vietnamese woman who would wash our clothes and polish our boots. The bottom left photo shows a letter and some of the envelopes that I sent her from Vietnam. My letters were always typed as I worked in the Army’s 17th Aviation Headquarters as the editor and photographer for the group. The bottom right shows the 1963 Lemans Coupe that I rented to her for $25 a month. I must have been cheaper than Avis or Hertz!

TURBO REGAL DRIVE-TRAIN FOR SALE –
We were recently contacted by a customer of ours located in upper eastern Pennsylvania near the New York border. About 12-15 years ago he bought a 1987 Grand National that had been t-boned in an accident. He bought the entire wreck. His plan was to drop the drivetrain in a street rod he was going to build.
This gentlemen also had a 1987 Grand National years ago in his car collection. Even with the best laid plans, this project got put on the back burner. This complete drivetrain with harness radiator transmission, etc. has been sitting in the second floor of his barn on a dolly. Because of his initial plan, he made sure he removed everything he needed for the conversion, including the engine harness, radiator, computer, etc.
FOR SALE – Complete stock 1987 Buick Grand National engine, all assembled, with turbocharger, intercooler, ignition coil, wire harness installed. AC compressor, condenser, alternator, computer instrument panel cluster, powermaster brake unit, radiator, original transmission still bolted to the engine. Everything together ready to install. Speedometer shows 1955 miles (probably 119,555 miles. Engine salvaged years ago for hot rod project that never happened. Engine is on a pulling cart in dry storage. The price is $4,800.
If interested, contact [email protected] I will put interested parties in touch with the seller. Parts are located in the northeastern part of Pennsylvania near the border with New York. We can email you photos also.

NEW PRODUCTS FROM US –
1984-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
SEMI-BLACK EXTERIOR TRIM SPRAY PAINT
This spray paint is semi-black and is a excellent color match for the black-out trim moldings that was used on certain Turbo Regal models.
It is made by the same company that color matches the grey, dark blue, burgundy paint we also sell from this same source.
It dries within minutes. While many variations of semi-black exist we found this to be a very close match. Remember, no paint color is going to match trim that has been exposed for over 30 years of sun and weather.
This is ideal to do the taillight trim parts and the plastic headlight bezels.

It goes on the side of the top portion of the metal factory air cleaner box. There is no precise location but generally can be found on the side towards the driver’s fender.
The reproduction Brake Switch Recall Decal measures 2″ x 1″ and is white with black lettering, which is the identical size and color as the original.
There was no exact placement for where the Service Department would put the Recall decal showing it was completed. Generally, it was put on the core support near the Belt Routing decal. A date was written in along with the other related information, which showed the recall was completed. The recall related to the powermaster brake switch was not issued until the fall of 1990.

When we check the links, they work fine. Most people having problems are using Internet Explorer. If you are having issues with links, try another browser to see if it works.
You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be use you are using the current version.
NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -
We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these must be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.
If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]
ABOUT OUR EMAILS -

Since expanding into used parts, I get a lot of emails and sometimes I may forget your request or may not remember who requested the item.

REPRODUCTION BRAKE SWITCH RECALL DECAL (1) SET
We are offering these two decals as a set.

However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.
ABOUT OUR EMAILS -
Any inquiries concerning used parts, you must email me direct - [email protected] - and I will answer you. However, if I fail to answer you within 24 hours, please email us again. Since expanding into used parts, I get a lot of emails and sometimes I may forget your request or may not remember who requested the item.
