Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members 01-16-2019 –
EPA IS CRACKING DOWN –
Rumor has it that the EPA is cracking down on older cars that are eliminating the catalytic converter. This affects our market. Time will tell but I believe once currently inventory runs out for test pipes from the various big suppliers they will discontinue the test pipe replacements. Currently we have a supply of #7809 in stock and have no idea at this point if we will be able to obtain any more. Course with the current government shut down EPA could be short handed in enforcing it! So, if your plan is to switch to a test pipe, your time and choices may become very limited in the near future.
PHOTO 1 - We show part #7422 the stock replacement test pipe that replaces the stock catalytic converter on any 1986-1987 Turbo Regal. It comes complete with the gasket for the 4-bolt flange. We also offer the test pipe with the dump option part #7809/
WINTER STORAGE –
Winter storage is something every owner in the cold areas of the country do if they want to protect their collectable car regardless of what it is. Having a heated building is of course the best method.
Here is the procedure that Ken out of Ohio does every year. He puts in fresh oil and attaches a high quality trickle charger to the battery. He also starts the car every 4 to 6 weeks and lets it warm up completely for about 30 minutes. This eliminates any moisture in the engine. If you let the car run for less time you can get condensation in the engine. He also puts the car in a forward gear and reverse to excise the transmission. Usually moves it about a foot in each direction. He also turns on the heater to excise the heater control valve and the heater core. Last but not least he turns on the AC as well. His car is covered up. Ken does not indicate if his garage is heated.
So whatever ritual you have for winter storage it pays in the long run. I would add always fill up the gas tank prior to storage. It also is advisable to have some sort of protection from rodents. In our case we have several cats that perform that duty in exchange for food, heat, and a comfortable environment.
EXTREME EXAMPLE OF THE DAMAGE RODENTS CAN DO –
Long time readers may recall back in the early 1990s I showed photos of what damage rodents did to a GNX that the owner did think he had properly stored for the winter. This GNX had less than 600 actual miles. This was back when GNX’s were trading owners in the 30 to 35 grand range.
This owner probably thought he had a good deal storing his prized original GNX in a building where candy suppliers stored their trucks. I don’t recall the exact circumstances but from the photos I am lead to believe that nobody checked on the GNX for a period of a few months. Rodents were attracted to the mother load of candy that was stored either in the same building or in the trucks that were in storage.
When the owner called me originally about his misfortune I just could not picture the extensive damage in my mind and requested he send me photos which he did.
PHOTO 2 – We show 4 photos of the massive damage these very ambitious rodents did to this pristine GNX. In some cases you can even read the label on the candy wrappers. These photos just show what the rodents put in the engine compartment. I can only imagine the other areas where the rodents stashed their loot. Not to mention the lingering smell and possible bitten wires that they may have done as well. You can clearly see the candy is several inches deep in some places. In the one photo you can’t even see the top of the valve cover or the intake.
The lesson is, always ask what else is going to be stored in the building for the winter where you plan to store your collectible car. Rodents don’t play favorites. Left undisturbed in a warm building they can wreck havoc over a period of weeks.
TURBO REGAL DOCUMENTATION –
Most owners of Turbo Regals realize the importance of having any original documentation to verify their car. Even if you don’t realize the importance of documentation initially, when you go to resell your car it is a important selling tool. We all recognize the importance of the factory labels on the car that contain the 17 digit VIN number. This would be the SPID decal, the door jamb decal and the metal ID plate on the firewall. The one critical additional documentation in my opinion, is having the original window sticker.
During the 1980s the window stickers from GM were very primitive. They were black and white with no color. The print format was so light they used almost looks like they used disappearing ink. They did nail down the aged look with the ivory looking paper they used!
PHOTO 3 – We show an original Buick window sticker pictured to the left that is for a 1987 Grand National. In this case the model was a Grand National which is how the last 10,000 or so Grand Nationals were titled instead of a Regal coupe with the Grand National being an option. Since this particular Grand National was near the end of production the dealership tacked on a few additional charges for things they added.
This additional cost sheet is pictured to the right. This includes something called a protection package for $1495, paint shield sound shield, fabric shield and rust proof which added another $695 to the cost. If that was not bad enough 4 grand was added for market value. Total additional cost was a whopping $6,249.00.
NEWER GM WINDOW STICKERS –
Over the years from going to junk yards I sometimes find original GM window stickers in the glove box. I have a collection of about 25 of them from various Buick-Chevrolet-Oldsmobile and Pontiac models. GM switched formats to a horizontal format keeping the same overall size. They went to full color and upgraded their print format so the copy stays sharp and clear even years later. Each car line of course had a clever tag line which you can see in the upper right hand corner. Buicks tag line in the 1990s was “Premium American Motorcars”. Chevrolet went with “The Heartbeat of America Today’s Chevrolet”. Later Chevrolet went with the tag line “We’ll Be There”. Oldsmobile used the tag line “The New Generation of Oldsmobile”. Pontiac’s tag line was “We Are Driving Excitement”.
PHOTO 4 – We show the top portion of 5 original GM window stickers from the 1990s and 2000s time frame. In recent years GM has thinned out the ranks of car lines saying goodbye to Oldsmobile and Pontiac.
REPORT ON KISSIMMEE AUCTION BY BRANDON CHANCE –
One of our customers Brandon Chance reports that a 1987 Grand National with T-Tops was a no sale at the 39 grand mark! He also says a 1987 Monte Carlo SS hardtop was bid to $13 grand and also was a no sale. Neither car reached its reserve. Both were low mileage examples. Not knowing the mileage the Grand National with T-Tops at 39 grand was fairly strong money unless the mileage was exceptionally low.
I’d be willing to bet that the seller of the Monte Carlo SS wished he had a Grand National to sell since the Monte Carlo did not even break the 15 grand. There is a huge price difference between the 1987 Grand National and any of the other G-body models.
This was the Mecum auction held in Kissimmee, Florida. There was at least 5 Grand Nationals at this auction. Most of the Grand Nationals were modified and it appears several were converted to vacuum brakes from the photos I seen on Mecums website. Again this is just my observation.
Be interesting to see how the Grand Nationals and Turbo-Ts do at the other January auctions held in Arizona.
PATRICK MAHOMES –
Patrick Mahomes is by far the best of the recent pack of rookie quarterbacks to start in the NFL recently. Cool and calm with a wicked side arm delivery his early baseball skills have proven to be quite helpful. He exhibits tremendous pinpoint accuracy while on the run. A joy to watch and for Chief fans a huge reason to be thinking super bowl!
UNUSUAL DREAM –
I read in a recent newspaper where this 24 year old always had a dream to outrun the cops. With speeds up to 130 mph he achieved his lifelong dream and posed for the cops with a big smile on his face. He may have seen too many episodes of the TV show “Dukes of Hazzard”.

C-2 – See photo 4 in 11-07-2018 issue. I have 4 of these Cadillac accessory trunk mats. I have them in the trunk of all our cars and use them in the pole building to keep any leaks from getting on the concrete floor. These trunk mats were a Cadillac option around the late 1980s. The mat is reversible rubber on the one side with the Caddy crest logo and grey cloth material on the other side. The trunk mat measures 33 inches by 36 inches, almost a perfect square. Mat is the perfect size for most trunks to protect your original trunk carpet. They are charcoal grey in color. Each one is almost like new with no stains. During the 1980s the window stickers from GM were very primitive. They were black and white with no color. The print format was so light they used almost looks like they used disappearing ink. They did nail down the aged look with the ivory looking paper they used!
PHOTO 3 – We show an original Buick window sticker pictured to the left that is for a 1987 Grand National. In this case the model was a Grand National which is how the last 10,000 or so Grand Nationals were titled instead of a Regal coupe with the Grand National being an option. Since this particular Grand National was near the end of production the dealership tacked on a few additional charges for things they added.
This additional cost sheet is pictured to the right. This includes something called a protection package for $1495, paint shield sound shield, fabric shield and rust proof which added another $695 to the cost. If that was not bad enough 4 grand was added for market value. Total additional cost was a whopping $6,249.00.
NEWER GM WINDOW STICKERS –
Over the years from going to junk yards I sometimes find original GM window stickers in the glove box. I have a collection of about 25 of them from various Buick-Chevrolet-Oldsmobile and Pontiac models. GM switched formats to a horizontal format keeping the same overall size. They went to full color and upgraded their print format so the copy stays sharp and clear even years later. Each car line of course had a clever tag line which you can see in the upper right hand corner. Buicks tag line in the 1990s was “Premium American Motorcars”. Chevrolet went with “The Heartbeat of America Today’s Chevrolet”. Later Chevrolet went with the tag line “We’ll Be There”. Oldsmobile used the tag line “The New Generation of Oldsmobile”. Pontiac’s tag line was “We Are Driving Excitement”.
PHOTO 4 – We show the top portion of 5 original GM window stickers from the 1990s and 2000s time frame. In recent years GM has thinned out the ranks of car lines saying goodbye to Oldsmobile and Pontiac.
REPORT ON KISSIMMEE AUCTION BY BRANDON CHANCE –
One of our customers Brandon Chance reports that a 1987 Grand National with T-Tops was a no sale at the 39 grand mark! He also says a 1987 Monte Carlo SS hardtop was bid to $13 grand and also was a no sale. Neither car reached its reserve. Both were low mileage examples. Not knowing the mileage the Grand National with T-Tops at 39 grand was fairly strong money unless the mileage was exceptionally low.
I’d be willing to bet that the seller of the Monte Carlo SS wished he had a Grand National to sell since the Monte Carlo did not even break the 15 grand. There is a huge price difference between the 1987 Grand National and any of the other G-body models.
This was the Mecum auction held in Kissimmee, Florida. There was at least 5 Grand Nationals at this auction. Most of the Grand Nationals were modified and it appears several were converted to vacuum brakes from the photos I seen on Mecums website. Again this is just my observation.
Be interesting to see how the Grand Nationals and Turbo-Ts do at the other January auctions held in Arizona.
PATRICK MAHOMES –
Patrick Mahomes is by far the best of the recent pack of rookie quarterbacks to start in the NFL recently. Cool and calm with a wicked side arm delivery his early baseball skills have proven to be quite helpful. He exhibits tremendous pinpoint accuracy while on the run. A joy to watch and for Chief fans a huge reason to be thinking super bowl!
UNUSUAL DREAM –
I read in a recent newspaper where this 24 year old always had a dream to outrun the cops. With speeds up to 130 mph he achieved his lifelong dream and posed for the cops with a big smile on his face. He may have seen too many episodes of the TV show “Dukes of Hazzard”.

C-2 – See photo 4 in 11-07-2018 issue. I have 4 of these Cadillac accessory trunk mats. I have them in the trunk of all our cars and use them in the pole building to keep any leaks from getting on the concrete floor. These trunk mats were a Cadillac option around the late 1980s. The mat is reversible rubber on the one side with the Caddy crest logo and grey cloth material on the other side. The trunk mat measures 33 inches by 36 inches, almost a perfect square. Mat is the perfect size for most trunks to protect your original trunk carpet. They are charcoal grey in color. Each one is almost like new with no stains. The price is just $34.95, which includes shipping to the basic 48 states. These mats are very high quality.

The cost for 2 consecutive weeks is $25. The cost for 4 consecutive weeks is $40. You save $10 with the 4-week plan. No changes can be made to your existing running ad. You can only run one ad at any given time. We will have a code system at the end of your ad, so we will know what week number your ad is to run - 2 or 4 weeks.
It can be an ad for something for sale or an ad for something you are looking for.

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these must be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.
