Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members 02-19-2020 –
RIP - BILL CAMPBELL – HURST-CAMPBELL INC. –
I learned earlier last week from a past Hurst employee that Bill Campbell passed away February 8, 2020 at the age of 97. His wife of 67 years had died in October.
Many of you realize we have a strong connection with Hurst going back to when I would walk over to their small shop in Glenside, PA as a school kid and get free Hurst decals. Years later when I first got married, Eileen worked at Hurst in the PR department.
A few years later as I started our GTO business, one of our big things was getting Hurst shifters rebuilt for customers. Since I had a towing contract with the local Oldsmobile dealer, I sometimes ended up towing some of the Hurst Oldsmobiles to the dealership.
In the mid-1980’s our son Darrell had his first autobody shop in nearby Ivyland, PA. I still remember him coming home one night and telling us about this guy who brought him this huge motorhome to detail. I asked the owner’s name and he said, “Bill Campbell.” My son had no idea who Bill Campbell was at the time. The bus was a Prevost bus. Prevost bus, known today the world over, is very popular among rock stars for touring.
Bill Campbell mostly stayed in the background during his tenure as the co-founder of Hurst. Very few products carried his name on the packaging. He was the engineer behind many of the products that Hurst brought to market. George Hurst was behind the marketing.
We were fortunate enough to have Bill come to our very first Open House at our old house in Furlong in 1988. We also had seven GTOs in attendance with Hurst wheels on them. Paul Zazarine, the editor of Muscle Car Review at the time, flew up from Florida as well for the event.
Few years later my son and I went out to Bill’s house and did an interview with him that we sold as a DVD for a number of years.
I think what he accomplished is quite remarkable. He left Hurst I believe around the end of 1969.
Since he was always into camping, he and a close friend went to Canada and bought the Prevost bus company. Back then the Prevost Bus Company was a small company making about 50 buses a year. In the 1995 Bill and his partner sold the Prevost bus company to Volvo.
It is quite an accomplishment to excel in two entirely different markets and be so well recognized with two different products - Hurst with the shifters and Prevost with the buses.
For the non-car collector, there is one product that Hurst developed that stands out even to this day. This product alone has saved countless number of lives. Bill first worked on developing it during his time at Hurst.
I am referring to the “Jaws of Life.” If ever there was a perfect name for a product, this is it!
It wasn’t until maybe 6 years ago that my wife and I got to witness first-hand the “Jaws of Life” in action. We were coming back from a funeral and came across a woman who had swerved into the other lane and went up an embankment.
The car landed mostly on the passenger side. It was a 1990s Caddy Eldorado. I was the first person to stop and rushed over to the car. Fortunately, the driver’s window was down and I was able to shut the car off as the wheels kept trying to turn. She had fallen over against the passenger door.
Try as I might, in my Sunday clothes and shoes I could not open the driver’s door as it was now pointing upward. She was aware of the situation and I told her help was on the way as Eileen had called 911.
Within a few minutes the EMS arrived. They immediately grabbed the Jaws of Life tool. They punctured the a-pillar and peeled the roof back on that Caddy like you would open a soup can. I was amazed at how fast this tool worked. They had her out of the car very quickly.
That life-saving tool that Bill engineered over 50-plus years ago is still being used today.
They also built a really good shifter, but that is another story as are some of the other products they made prior to the shifters.
Among my Hurst collection I found photos of Hurst testing the “Jaws of Life” for various Press people. I remember being told it was also showed to various members of Congress in Washington DC. Some of these photos may be of that showing in Washington DC.
I think it’s remarkable that a company that was heavily focused on the automotive aftermarket products invested time and money to make an entirely different product. A product that has saved countless number of lives over the last 50-plus years. Time is a critical part in any rescue and there is no doubt the Jaws of Life comes through when it matters the most.
Here is a link to his Tribute page online.
PHOTO 1 – The top left photo shows Bill Campbell autographing metal plates for us in 2011. The top right photo shows George Hurst on the far right holding the “Jaws of Life” and the remains of a Chevrolet. This picture looks like it was taken at a race track. The other 2 photos appear to be a demonstration at an office building, possibly for the government.
2018 MUSTANG COBRA JET FACTORY BUILT MUSTANG DRAG RACER –
I had no idea Ford built a special drag racer Mustang in 2018. I was at the local Ford dealership the other day checking out what years our new Auto Easel fits and they had one of these limited product Mustang Cobra Jet Factory Mustang Drag Racers in the showroom. It was a leftover from 2018.
Research shows Ford made 68 of these in honor the 1968 Cobra Jet. A true 8-second quarter-mile factory-built Ford. The package even comes with some extra parts including a second motor. It is not street legal!
From what I read, these cars were available in 2 color combinations. This one is white with 2 miles on the odometer. The car is currently on ebay, listing #274232728975. It is located at Fred Beans Ford in Doylestown, PA. The initial price for this Mustang was $289,000. The sale price on the windshield is $179,000. On ebay it is listed at $136,520 or Best Offer! That’s quite a drop from $289,000.
This factory Ford Dragstrip Mustang reminded me of the time I was down in Ocala visiting with Don Garlits on a business deal with ZDDPlus. Don had just taken delivery of the very first Challenger Drag Pak car #001. That first year, Dodge made just 50 of these cars for the drag strip.
Don had just removed the steel wheels and tires, the struts and rear springs, making the necessary upgrades. I was at the right place at the right time and I bought 3 of the original steel wheels with tires, front strut assembly and rear coil spring. I had him autograph each part and he wrote “2009 001” on the parts with his signature. Paul Castle was there with me and he purchased the fourth tire and wheel. We both ended up buying a lot of Don’s racecar parts. I even bought his dented tailgate off his personal truck and had him autograph it.
PHOTO 2 – The top left and top right photo shows this brand new 2018 Mustang Cobra Jet Drag Racer. It is one of just 68 built by Ford for 2018. The bottom left and bottom right photos show the front strut and rear spring that Don Garlits sold me that he removed from his brand new 2009 Dodge Challenger Drag Pak car. His car is #001 of just 50 built! Note his autograph and reference to 2009 and #001 car. Parts are virtually brand new as the car had maybe 5 miles on it. These parts are listed for sale in the Rare Parts section.
COLLECTIBLE PARTS FOR SALE –
We have pictured some Package Deals in Photo 3. Some are collectible items and others are parts that would be important to have as spares.
PHOTO 3 – The top left photo shows 5 items related to the powermaster brake system. NOTE - you can clearly see how crushed the foam gasket gets between the powermaster unit and the firewall as we show both an original used one alongside a brand new one. The top right photo shows 4 different power six emblems. The bottom left photo shows a Buick wristwatch that is brand new with tag still attached. Also, a later Buick metal tri-shield key fob and then an earlier Buick leather key fob. The bottom right photo shows 3 different emblems.
AUTO EASEL CAR SHOW HOOD LATCH DISPLAY STAND FITMENT –
This past week I was able to research more cars that our new Auto Easel Car Show Hood Latch Display stand will fit. It will fit all the 1982 thru 2002 Camaro and Firebirds. It fits all the 2005 thru 2010 Chrysler 300 and 2005 thru 2010 Chargers. It also fits the 2008 thru 2018 Challengers and 2005 thru 2008 Dodge Magnums. It also fits all the 1995 through 1997 Ford Rangers.
PHOTO 4 – We show our new Auto Easel Car Show Hood Latch Display on a late-1980s Camaro. In this photo, the display sign is 8-½" x 11" size. In the second photo, we show a later Firebird and that one is an 11" x 17" vertical display. One of the advantages of this new Auto Easel Car Show Display Stand that we developed, is you are not limited to any size or limited to having the display sign be vertical or horizontal. It can be mounted in either direction. We even accounted for the fact if you have to install the clamp slightly off center on the hood latch, the copy for display can be mounted off center of the display panel so it will be centered in the front of the show car or truck. This is the reason the display panel is only 7-½" x 10" inches.
THE AUTO EASEL - CAR SHOW DISPLAY HOOD LATCH STAND UPDATE–
We just got the parts back last week to make up the complete kits. I am now just waiting on the clamps to come back later this week from the powder coaters and then the one portion of the clamp gets rubber coated. We expect to be able to start shipping late next week. Remember special pricing is in effect until the last day of April.
At this writing neither car show display stand is yet on our website. You must call Christina to order it. She would not charge your credit card until we are able to ship it to you. This is way before most car shows will start in the midwest and east coast areas of the country.
This design of attaching to the factory hood latch will fit all 1982-1987 G-Body cars. The clamp portion is rubber coated to prevent scratching the actual hood latch. The entire kit is made in the USA.
It is the first product that has been made involving 3 generations of Kirbans – me, my son and my granddaughter.
It is also the first product we developed that will fit virtually every U.S. or foreign car from the 1960s thru current.
Here is an up-to-date list that this Auto Easel will fit:
1955-1957 Chevrolet
1979-2004 Mustangs
1982-2002 Camaro/Firebird
2010-2015 Camaro
1982-1987 G-Body All models
Almost all cars and trucks have the hood latch assembly on the core support. Cars that have the hood latch attached to the hood have an opening on the core support for the hood latch to lock into. Our clamp design fits inside the opening on the core support on the cars we have test fitted thus far.
You would mount your information on the display panel. It can be mounted vertical or horizontal. The information must first be mounted on a poster board so it stays rigid on the aluminum panel. By using a poster board for the information, you can go as big as 20" x 24" in either direction.
This clever method to secure a display sign eliminates any issues with wind blowing it over or someone tripping over your sign. It positions your display stand dead center on the front of your show car or truck and at the perfect reading height.
The angle gives several inches of clearance to the front header panel as well as the header ornament that appears on some of the Turbo Regal models.
Both the polished stainless handle and the Hurst handle have the same angle and are the same length. Handles are interchangeable. The clamp part is powder-coated glossy black. All of the hardware is stainless in each kit. The end result is a display stand that does not distract from your show car. I just know that once car show participants see this on show cars this summer, they will want to know where they can purchase it.
This Introductory Price for both designs ends at midnight April 30, 2020.
The Kirban Auto Easel Car Show Display Hood Latch Stand with the polished handle, part #7880, can be purchased for $99.95 plus $10 shipping to the basic 48 states. The Suggested Retail Price is $119.95-$129.95. You save $20-$30.
The other version of the Auto Easel Car Show Display Hood Latch includes a new original Hurst handle part #7881. The Introductory Price is $159.95 plus $10 shipping. The Suggested Retail Price is $179.95-$189.95. You save $20-$30. NOTE - The Hurst handle alone retails for $60. The Hurst handle version will prove to be most popular with buyers who have older muscle cars and, in many cases, have a Hurst shifter in their car.
PART #7880 - THE KIRBAN AUTO EASEL™ - CAR SHOW DISPLAY HOOD LATCH STAND WITH POLISHED HANDLE - Introductory Price $99.95 plus $10 shipping.
PART #7881 - THE KIRBAN AUTO EASEL™ - CAR SHOW DISPLAY HOOD LATCH STAND WITH NEW HURST HANDLE - Introductory Price $159.95 plus $10 shipping.
Again, you must call our office - 215-766-1611. To place your order for the Kirban Auto Easel that you want. You will not be charged for it until we can ship it.
CONGRATS TO OUR GRANDDAUGHTER DEVYN -
We were just informed this past week that Devyn has made the Dean’s List at Penn State, majoring in an Honors Degree in Engineering Science and Mechanics. This is quite an accomplishment, something that never came up in my life at school. Our new Auto Easel is the first project that she and her dad and I have been involved with designing that is being produced.

1985 REGAL LIMITED CHEVY V8 POWERED – STILL AVAILABLE - FOR SALE –
One of our relatives local to us is having us sell their custom-built 1985 Regal Limited that has been in the family since new. This 1985 Regal Limited has always been garaged, never hit, or smoked in. Our son Darrell repainted this car the factory color back in 2003 for $2,000. At 128,000 miles, the engine was converted with a brand GM 350/330 HP crate motor at a cost of $5,200. This was backed up with a rebuilt turbo 400 transmission. A local shop that we deal with redid the rear putting in a new eaton posi with, I believe, to be 3.08 gears. Gear ratio is perfect for high speed cruising.
Being a Limited, it is very well optioned and even the power antenna works. It has Bilstein shocks. Tires are fairly new. The tire size is 205/75 by 14s. Riding on the original 14 by 6 steel wheels with full Regal wheel covers.
With just a few Turbo Regal upgrades this would be an extremely nice solid handling Regal. I you install set of 16 by 8s on all four corners, a Turbo-T steering box, a rear sway bar, and a leather wheel, it will not only ride better, but look better too. The doors shut like they are brand new. The driver’s power pillow seat is the only interior part that shows very minor wear along the edge and around the power switch. A set of tasteful 3 gauges hang of the bottom edge of the dash under the radio. The power seat motor runs but does not function. Headliner will need to be replaced. The steering column has movement in the one section of the tilt.
The current mileage is 135,000, so that is less than 10,000 miles on a brand new GM crate motor. Electric fan with a V8 radiator handles the cooling. The AC has been completely rebuilt. Car has long-branch headers that dump into a new GNX exhaust system. Bigger front sway bar was installed. MSD ignition and an Edelbrock 4-barrell carburetor are fed with a cold air system. The adult owner has never once driven it hard to chirp the tires. Car still has its original half-padded roof. Body and paint are real nice with zero rust. All the stainless and emblems are in good condition. Nothing is missing. Bumpers also are close to new. All the critical labels are still intact, including the SPID label on the inside trunk lid. This car is a bargain and has had excellent care since new.
PRICE REDUCTION $6,495 - OBO
The owner needs to sell the car. The body is exceptional with near perfect chrome, and all the stainless is nice. The car is at our house. For more photos, email me direct - [email protected]

WELL-OPTIONED LOW-MILEAGE 1987 GRAND NATIONAL - FOR SALE –
This Grand National is still available. This extremely well-optioned, low-mileage 1987 Grand National that is for sale. The owner wants me to sell it for him. He has had it 6 years. The miles on this Grand National is a mere 48,200. Options include factory moon roof, power windows, power locks, tilt, cruise, delay wipers, concert sound, power trunk, digital dash, power seat, working power antenna, and posi rear. The Grand National is located in Maryland.
It has a beautiful repaint done prior to his owning it. He had paint correction done and ceramic coating this past Spring. The car really shines, probably 100%, better than original. Everything functions 100%, even the original AC.
Additional features include embroidered floor mats, few chrome goodies under the hood, Kirban adjustable fuel regulator, hot wire kit, 60lb injectors, adjustable wastegate, TT chip, new bumper fillers, new fuel tank, and has dual a-pillar gauges and console gauge package. He checked the car with a magnet and shows no putty or filler anywhere. It has the factory chip guard along bottom of the car.
According to the owner Mike, the Grand National has had 4 previous owners. The car shows no accidents or any indication that mileage is not accurate.
The price is $26,900. This Grand National is priced to sell. You would be hard pressed to find a better example of a well-optioned 1987 Grand National that would measure up to the quality of this one at this price. A factory moon roof with a power seat option is extremely rare. This car this Spring would easily bring several grand more than it is priced at this fall.
This car is show quality from any angle. For more information and photos, email me direct [email protected]
Pass the word along to your friends who may be looking for a great-looking well-optioned Grand National.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -
We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these must be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.
If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]

With near record breaking warmer than usual temperatures we are already seeing some of our plants sprout up in our yard!

Since expanding into used parts, I get a lot of emails and sometimes I may forget your request or may not remember who requested the item.
IN CLOSING –
